N.W.A. In The Rock N Roll Hall of Fame 2016

Besides the Seattle seen the other late '80s early '90s explosion was gangsta rap. N.W.A. were the pioneering group to lead the way.
What are your thoughts on N.W.A. making it to the rock n roll hall of fame for 2016? Well deserved in my opinion...

I am glad there in, but they really did only have 1 iconic album. But that album was an album that pioneered a movement and genre.

Yeah. They deserve to be there.

same can be said for the Sex Pistols

I love NWA, but I still don't get how they are considered for the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. Lots of respect for the group though.

Straight Outta Compton was probably my favorite movie from 2015. If you haven't seen it yet, check it out.

It needs to be called the Music Hall of Fame since there are other genres other than just rock music inducted. That's always been my opinion, anyway.

  • I was completely surprised they made it in the hall. They were an amazing, game changing group and they deserve to be there.

Yet still no Yes, Roxy Music, Iron Maiden, Dire Straits, Cars and ELO but what do you expect from an institution controlled by a magazine that had Kim Kartrashian, Weeknd, Bieber and Donald Trump on their cover this year?

Nice to see Deep Purple and Cheap Trick in there, though.

Completely agree. Like the Beastie Boys, they were leaders of an entire genre and influenced countless artists after them. Plus Straight Outta Compton was probably my most listened to rap album I own

You're missing the point completely. NWA are being inducted because of their impact on ROCK AND ROLL. Not because somehow their iconic rap album is a rock album.

Before NWA (and be clear it was really their 2nd album that exploded in the white suburbs of America, even though the first was the best), there was some impact of rap on rock music but it was spotty. The explosion of gangsta rap and white young people embracing the music and their version of the culture (cuz let's be clear, no one in the white burbs was living the life that life in South Central was really like), it impacted rhythms and lyrics and instrumentation in ROCK. I'm not saying I love some of the bands this trend generated, but the musical impact of rap on rock is unmistakable.

THAT is the standard that the Rock Hall of Fame mostly uses: how did the band 25 yrs after their first album impact the genre of rock and roll? Public Enemy and Don't Believe the Hype and maybe the Sugarhill Gang are the only two rap artists I can think of who impacted rock more than NWA, and I think they're both already in.

So you don't have to like NWA or like that they're being inducted, but be clear about WHY they're being inducted, because actually you can't really argue with the impact. It's clear in pre-rap rock and post-birth-of-rap rock.

There are songs on Bleach and In Utero that I'd consider iconic...

Please see my above post - I should have responded to your post with the way the Rock Hall defines their inductees... it's about the band's influence and impact on ROCK, not the genre of the band itself.

Now you know how I feel about KROQ in Los Angeles. They're turning into a pseudo hipster top 40 station and they're playing Adele ffs. It should be KPOP. That station flat out sucks now.

Are you claiming N.W.A. and the Posse is better than Straight Outta Compton?!?

Absolutely not. S.O.C. is THE album. But it was the 2nd album that entered the charts at #1 and caused the music industry to really stand up and take notice, and it was the 2nd album that all the white kids in the burbs were buying and scaring their parents with.

As often happens, it's not the best album that gets the mega notice. But it's the 1st album that is "iconic" and that people who know music know was a game-changer in terms of impacting rock.

Just got to read this now- long day at work yesterday. I understand that. You made a very good and solid point. I do tend to overlook that in terms of rock and roll hall of fame inductions. I think I posted before I read your post, but you did bring up a great point.

I quoted you because I was disagreeing with you that it should be called "The Popular Music Hall of Fame" - for all the reasons I mentioned above. It's not a big deal, but your comment and a few others seem like you guys don't understand the criteria, or else you wouldn't make that comment. I see that another person I quoted understands.
