What is it with PJ Posters?

I totally get charging 30-40 dollars for a poster at a concert to make big profits on merchandise and capitalizing on the thrill of the moment purchasers. But what floors me is seeing posters on eBay or even on our forum for sometimes upwards of 100 dollars. I did just buy my first poster from a (super kind) 10c member through this forum, and it's not like I regret it or anything, I just can't really see why they're so expensive. I'm fighting temptation right now to spend more money on a couple posters but at the same time it seems ridiculous to spend 100 bucks CAD for 2 posters. Is it a supply/demand thing that they're only a limited quantity and are a unique piece that proves you went to a big concert? I mean what am I missing here? Is it worth it to buy posters? Or do you end up regretting it after a certain point? You can't help but feel that after looking through this forum at all the people selling posters. Obviously there are some out there who still enjoy their collection, but what gives man? They're just posters!

Stamps, coins, vinyl, baseball cards, antiques, classic cars, metal oil can sign on American Pickers......it is collecting. Supply and Demand. Highly sought after posters demand more than retail prices when they are not readily available from retail outlets.

If it is too much, don't buy. I don't understand your question.

  • I pretty much figured everything you said shortly after asking the question, I have a bad habit of asking questions I already know the answer to. Mostly I was just surprised at how valuable some of them get to be but it's not any different than collecting comic books or what have you.

You're also talking about event specific posters. I have no idea what the actual numbers are but if PJ is playing an 18,000 seat arena they don't make 18,000 posters. So when you happen to get a great poster, which is quite a rare thing these days, the price shoots up. There just aren't a lot of them. Also, PJ posters tend to be very good quality. I've yet to get any framed but when I took one to a framer for a quote he commented on the great quality of the poster.

Me too. It's alright! I like a lot of this stuff but can't justify spending the collectors worth anymore. Frustration takes over sometimes.

Yea this. We're not talking about a kinkos job, it's designed by an artist and screen printed. Some of them are plate signed for the show. Some are signed by hand in an AP version, limited quantities. But yes it mostly is a supply and demand thing.

It's a slippery slope. Keep fighting the temptation or you are liable to end up like the rest of us...spending too much money on gotta have posters!
