I just picked up my deluxe edition copy and listened to it. Interesting.
I was hoping for more song demos rather than sound experiments.
Anyone heard it? Thoughts?

I didn't know this was out! When I saw the movie, I was like, now THAT would be cool. I want to hear THAT stuff! Sooooo .... I will let you know. :disappointed:
I think it is kinda cool that he experimented privately with aural art.
God knows we have Outcesticide Volumes 1 through 48 so how many demos could be left in hiding. :D

ps -- anyone around here remember onemoresolo.net ?
god i miss that place (and all the shit i downloaded from there, died in a horrible hard drive fire)

The more I listen to this the more I am appreciating it, even the sound experiments.
This CD is inspirational to me, I do similar with my phone, I sound record and video my guitar playing and humming and some turn into songs and some don't.

I need to listen to the rest to give it its due, but man, some of the shit on the deluxe edition is just unlistenable trash that, in my opinion, he would be embarassed as hell for others to hear.

I heard that this is really awful.

I heard that this is really awful.

I used to record everything on cassette; my riffs, demos, rehearsals, me and my buddies fucking around....when I bought this I didnt realize this is partially what it was. I cant believe courtney and fances thought this was appropriate to release to the masses. Especially when he said himself how he specifically did not want that.

The review in Entertainment Weekly has me intrigued.

"It’s hard to grade Montage of Heck. Considering sound quality and execution of ideas, it’s in the lower C range. But as a cultural artifact that provides an inside look at the creative process of an enigmatic genius, it’s absolutely indispensable. A"

They give it a C for sound, but an A for "cultural artifact"

    Sounds like bullshit to me.

Also sounds like a waste of money.

I would probably listen to it, but not buy it - especially on vinyl.

Was there already a 'soundtrack' for the movie released?

no, just two editions released. one is about 13 songs, and the one I bought was 31. I'm guessing I should have just bought the one with 13, as it seems from what I've listened to, the other 18 are just noise and weird sounds and feedback and stuff.

I found the 13 track CD on Spotify. Going to listen now.

Because if Kurt didn't want it to be released it'd be wrong.

What more can I say and Desire are nice.
    Burn the rain also.

I am amazed how talented he was, he made songwriting look easy.

I would imagine he wouldn't want the snippets of his weirdness being released. But the song demos he more that likely just had an issue with sound quality and the rawness of it all than the overall quality of the songs themselves.

but this is all supposition on my part, based on what I believe I would want/not want released of my own stuff if I were in his position.

Some reviewed it and went on to say (I'm paraphrasing): "The creative well appeared to have dried up for Cobain and the evidence is in this box set."

I was going to but the $130 box set, to have it. Now I don't even want the $15 CD after all the poor reviews its received.

I would argue that's an unfair assumption on the reviewers part. I have hundreds, if not thousands of song ideas in the well, and 98% of them I would say are garbage. the well dried up because he killed himself. many times an idea you put to tape, once fleshed out, ends up being completely different upon release. he had no choice in this release. what frances and Morgan thought were awesome, he may have thought were shyte (frances has said herself she doesn't even like nirvana). if you listen to early demos/cassette recordings of some of their best songs, they sound similar in their initial simplicity.

I look at it this way. If you're a fan of Kurt Cobain and Nirvana, owning Montage of Heck (however you feel necessary; DVD, Blu-Ray, vinyl, CD) is a great thing. You're supporting your passion like you've always done.
