Letter to NBC suspending debate partnership

Mr. Andrew Lack
Chairman, NBC News
30 Rockefeller Plaza
New York, New York 10112

Dear Mr. Lack,

I write to inform you that pending further discussion between the Republican National Committee (RNC) and our presidential campaigns, we are suspending the partnership with NBC News for the Republican primary debate at the University of Houston on February 26, 2016. The RNC’s sole role in the primary debate process is to ensure that our candidates are given a full and fair opportunity to lay out their vision for America’s future. We simply cannot continue with NBC without full consultation with our campaigns.

The CNBC network is one of your media properties, and its handling of the debate was conducted in bad faith. We understand that NBC does not exercise full editorial control over CNBC’s journalistic approach. However, the network is an arm of your organization, and we need to ensure there is not a repeat performance.

CNBC billed the debate as one that would focus on “the key issues that matter to all voters—job growth, taxes, technology, retirement and the health of our national economy.” That was not the case. Before the debate, the candidates were promised an opening question on economic or financial matters. That was not the case. Candidates were promised that speaking time would be carefully monitored to ensure fairness. That was not the case. Questions were inaccurate or downright offensive. The first question directed to one of our candidates asked if he was running a comic book version of a presidential campaign, hardly in the spirit of how the debate was billed.

While debates are meant to include tough questions and contrast candidates’ visions and policies for the future of America, CNBC’s moderators engaged in a series of “gotcha” questions, petty and mean-spirited in tone, and designed to embarrass our candidates. What took place Wednesday night was not an attempt to give the American people a greater understanding of our candidates’ policies and ideas.

I have tremendous respect for the First Amendment and freedom of the press. However, I also expect the media to host a substantive debate on consequential issues important to Americans. CNBC did not.

While we are suspending our partnership with NBC News and its properties, we still fully intend to have a debate on that day, and will ensure that National Review remains part of it.

I will be working with our candidates to discuss how to move forward and will be in touch.

Sincerely,

Reince Priebus
Chairman, Republican National Committee

Heres the thing, the RNC the DNC and all the candidates have a say in how things transpire. They GOP had the opportunity to say no to any one oof the moderators in any of these debates and the ones to come. The fact is they are just as accountable as the networks hosting these.

What we have seen is the moderators become , if not the story then a part of it. Thats indicative of the "personality cult" nature of modern news, where more is said of speculation and conjecture than a reporting of fact. Its all too opinion driven.

  • I find the Republican candidates' indignation to the questions asked to be quite comical. They rarely answer ANY question asked of them on topic anyway. Most answers given are rehearsed speeches bashing someone or something completely unrelated to the question asked.

all this crap is not only seen and heard by just us few.....everybody sees and hears it and that's why someone like Trump is holding such a strong lead in the polls, he seems to run on a non-politician agenda.
people are fed up with political bullshit that is shoved in their faces year after year and if someone like Trump were to win the presidential race the "politicians" of this country have nobody to blame but themselves.

Trump is running on reality show fame and all the other selfserving bullshit he has spewed over the years.

He's an overgrown juvenile. Theres is nothing presidential in how he comports himself. In particular how he "responds" to legitimate criticisms.

that's my point, a lot of people are fed up with the usual run of the mill political lies and hiding that come with "politicians" as we know them, now along comes a guy with ZERO political experience and talks with broken sentences and publicly calls bullshit on the politicians we already don't trust so like him or not there is no denying he has created a very large following, just for a moment try and see this whole thing without personal bias, who cares what Trump looks like or talks like ? to a lot of the people he is a new idea that has not been tarnished by political corruption ...a little guy, David so to speak trying to take on the Goliaths of politics...and boom ! he has a following.
I'm not pushing Trump to anybody I'm just seeing it like it is and calling out what could very possibly happen in these up coming elections, just look around and think about what has been happening for the last 20 to 30 years...people are pissed ! and they're ready to have what they believe is in their best interest and they no longer trust "politicians"

I doubt the 47% registered independent voters will swing his way IF he sees himself nominated. Look for the polls of the independents not registered repubs.

    WE hold the power.
