DEAR MR. VEDDER...

Here’s a new one, Israel found out that not only must it answer to The Nations of the world but now it must answer to rock stars. On July 11th 2014, Eddie Vedder, front man of Pearl Jam went into a frantic rant how Israel was entering territories that do not belong to them, and killing babies. Wait…what?
It seems that having missiles flying into your country doesn’t allow for military defense according to Mr. Vedder. Is it Israel’s fault that the missile launchers on school property? I suppose if someone were to break into Mr. Vedder’s house and start shooting, he’d take out his guitar and play a tune.
Let’s get down to it; in the wake of the daily stabbings happening in Israel, I ask Mr. Vedder: If it’s ok with you, may Israel please defend itself against terrorist attacks?

Frantic rant? Hardly. He never even said the word "Israel". This post is a bit ridiculous.

    Imagine That -- I’m Still Anti-War.
    July 16 2014

Most of us have heard John Lennon sing
“You may say I’m a dreamer,… but I’m not the only one.”

And some of us, after another morning dose of news coverage full of
death and destruction, feel the need to reach out to others to see if
we are not alone in our outrage. With about a dozen assorted
ongoing conflicts in the news everyday, and with the stories
becoming more horrific, the level of sadness becomes unbearable.
And what becomes of our planet when that sadness becomes apathy?
Because we feel helpless. And we turn our heads and turn the page.

Currently, I’m full of hope. That hope springs from the multitudes of
people that our band has been fortunate enough to play for night
after night here in Europe. To see flags of so many different nations,
and to have these huge crowds gathered peacefully and joyfully is
the exact inspiration behind the words I felt the need to emphatically relay.
When attempting to make a plea for more peace in the world at a rock concert,
we are reflecting the feelings of all those we have come in contact with
so we may all have a better understanding of each other.

That’s not something I’m going to stop anytime soon. Call me naïve.
I’d rather be naïve, heartfelt and hopeful than resigned to say
nothing for fear of misinterpretation and retribution.

The majority of humans on this planet are more consumed by the
pursuit of love, health, family, food and shelter than any kind of war.

War hurts. It hurts no matter which sides the bombs are falling on.

With all the global achievements in modern technology,
enhanced communication and information devices, cracking the
human genome, land rovers on Mars etc., do we really have to
resign ourselves to the devastating reality that conflict will be
resolved with bombs, murder and acts of barbarism?

We are such a remarkable species. Capable of creating beauty.
Capable of awe-inspiring advancements. We must be capable of
    resolving conflicts without bloodshed.

I don’t know how to reconcile the peaceful rainbow of flags we see
each night at our concerts with the daily news of a dozen global
conflicts and their horrific consequences. I don’t know how to
process the feeling of guilt and complicity when I hear about the
deaths of a civilian family from a U.S. drone strike. But I know that
we can’t let the sadness turn into apathy. And I do know we are
better off when we reach out to each other.

While I generally stand on the side of self-defence, what's been at least equally as appalling in this Paestinian-Israeli conflict has been the casualty ratio between the two sides. In the past, it's trended towards 10 Palestinians for each Israeli killed, though the last I saw these numbers were drawing closer in this latest round of attacks by both sides.

Too bad there's no simple answers to resolve the issues of that area of the world.

Self defense and war are two very different things.

I find it interesting that there always seem to be more threads about war than peace. Is it any wonder we are a warring people?

I love how the apologists act as if both sides are equal, as if everything is just great on both sides of the divide and one side or the other is just going about and stabbing people for shits and giggles. It's a false equivalency and narrative. When one side is treated as less than human with shit for a future, under the boot of Israel, what do you expect would happen. When is Israel going to lead?

we are reflecting the feelings of all those we have come in contact with
so we may all have a better understanding of each other.

    “I hope someday you’ll join us,…”
Won’t you listen to what the man said.

I remember last year we had a debate somewhere around the OP's issue and this Eddie quote which I defended. I got shelled with heavy artillery from one poster for doing that, LOL! Bottom line though for me is- I'm still with Ed and John on this. I'm still anti-war.
Thing is we know that John was a phony. Hopefully Ed isn't.
With all due respect, bootlegger, it's hard for me reading this minus the bulk of what makes up communication- tone of voice, facial expression, eye contact, gestures and body language- to know if you're simply being honest, rather cynical, or ironic. Care to elaborate?

Who wouldn't be for no wars? But I wonder if somebody would you attack you or your family, would you defend yourself?

Self defense and war are two very different things.

I find it interesting that there always seem to be more threads about war than peace. Is it any wonder we are a warring people?
no wonder at all, from the beginning man has fought and killed to preserve their borders, hunting grounds or water sources.

I think I know what bootlegger is talking about, he did cause great pain in his marriage with drug addiction, sex and mental abuse not to mention he had a violent temper when he drank and had been some documented fights...he was no wussy, the governments file on John was because they feared his popularity, that he could sway the younger citizens against the government, but in my opinion he was no phony as to who he was, nothing better and nothing worse than you or I.
