ed: cheers
did we say hello yet?
hello hello
well this is the uh this is the third fun final night of our week here in san francisco
and uh this has been a great room and and uh the last two nights the crowds have just been you all are takin care of yourselves so incredibly well and uh we appreciate that in this kind of situation
and uh it wasn't until reading in the paper that it uh came to my attention that we haven't played san francisco proper in like eleven years I thought it was less
so uh thanks for coming out the way you have and supporting us and our music and Sonic Youth and (stone: rock and roll)
this next song has uh has a connection to san francisco because it was uh it was written in a uh in a hotel room here uh in the midst of having a really, really bad day and this song's called Red Mosquito
[one song later...]
ed: you know him over there that's mike mccready on the guitar
in the studio he played that part on that record he played it with a uh a bic a uh zippo an old zippo lighter it belonged to my grandpa and afterwards he asked me if he could have it and I said I said no
I found it the other day mike, I wanted to tell you that I found it and i am going to give it back to you, you should have it yeah
it's better to give than receive this song is called Unemployable
[one song later...]
stone: hey can I just say something uh this is all great and we're having a great time but as far as people like pushing and stuff from behind it's really important that we just kinda everyone just chill out and just there's no need to push it just doesn't make any sense so please just try to be mellow enjoy yourselves have a good time enjoy the music
ed: yes so just to reiterate you know there's also a lot of uh it's kinda fifty fifty men and women up front which is always a good sign you know that's usually a good sign so if you're not taking care of your fellow man just try to take care of your fellow woman
cause what you don't want to make us do is play a bunch of slow songs in a row I don't think you want that so that's really important
this is a sad song but not a slow song it's called Sad
[two songs later]
ed: uh I know there's gotta be uh we're still in california uh there's gotta be this is our last gig in California listen we might not see any surfers for a long time this is for all the surfers this is for all the Big Wave surfers
[two song later...]
ed: uh all right I don't want to offend anybody under the age of twelve but I'm just going to say that was some pretty fuckin great singing man oh don't stop now sing with me it's our band it's my band it's his it's all our band and it's our song just keep singing sing all night
[one song later...]
talk about evolution this is peter there's a fine example of evolution right there he's English so even if he's not actually more evolved than any of us on stage it sounds like he is this is the song I thought we were going to do a singalong on this one this one right here
[two songs later...]
ed: uh all right that one was a request and uh this one is uh too so I know at least two of you are happy
[two songs later, encore...]
ed; hey this uh, this is a guy uh that uh we just love him we've been playing for quite a number of years and every time we've played with him we've played out at uh at Shoreline and uh he's never really spent time he's never really spent time in san francisco and uh this is him on the b3 mr boom gaspar
[two songs later...]
ed: all right this number is one that we uh we recorded not far from here up in the hills and uh it's a song by a woman called Victoria Williams and uh wherever she is tonight we send it out to her song's called Crazy Mary
[one song later...]
mike: boom gaspar
ed: the hawaiian hands of boom gaspar
[two songs later...]
ed: thank you so much
you're beautiful
[second encore, two songs later...]
ed: all right this this is uh this this has really been great these last few nights in san francisco thanks so much and these people way over here in the corner to their comrades over here these people way in the corner to everybody in the very back and the very back is not that far back that’s true
just wanted to raise a toast before we go you know we’ve been a band for uh fifteen years and counting and uh we’re (stone: uh) we’re extremely inspired by uh by (stone: uh) the group that we played with tonight Sonic Youth who have been together longer than that by five years at least and uh this is our last show with them and we’re going to miss them I’m going to miss them dude just want to say it’s been great having these two band together to play for you and you’ve been a great crowd thank you again nice seeing you again
So this song was written a long, long time ago oh in our lives and and uh and at the time it had to do with just kinda society in general anyways it seems to having meaning now again and so we’re playing it again and it goes like this
[one song later…]
ed: I was just talking about sonic youth and on the stage right now with us for the very first time from sonic youth and many other artistic projects a guitar genius mr lee renaldo
and I’m not sure why but this feels like a san francisco song
and uh and it’s uh we’re gonna
I think we’re gonna play the shit out of it
[and they did, one song later…]
ed: I thought when you break your guitar the shows over I thought that was how that worked
you going to break that one too?
I didn’t know he had more than one guitar but that’s
all right this is goodnight mike wants to play another song this is it
[one song later…]
ed: thank you thanks to sonic youth and thank you san francisco
