I wouldn't - if the record is visibly damaged as you said, then why take a chance.

The more damaged a record is, the harder it is on the needle.

  • Good lord. Was this a crosley by chance? Because shaving of the vinyl would be considered normal then...

Out of curiosity, what is the tracking force on your stylus? Recommended and actual?

Nickelback will also damage your needle and your ears.

Won't hurt the needle. It's the hard part. Just sound bad.

  • The tracking force should be between 1.5-2 Grams, no more, no less. I own a record store, I got this one....This is the silliest thing I have seen, turntable wise. Are you playing the "Etched" side of the "Touch Me I'm Dick red 45"??? DO NO DO THAT. If your needle it Grooving your records, take your deck and a 50 foot long piece of rope. Tie one end of the rope to the deck, and the other to your car. Now drive to Sound Stage Direct, ask for Jay, and he will hook you up.

How do you figure? Needles get worn faster when you use them on damaged vinyl. Though I'm not sure why anyone would want to play a gouged record either way, lol.

Pretty much. The whole "shaved the record" nonsense was funny though. I would suggest using a very lathery shaving cream on all of your records. Be safe and try it out first on a Benny.

    I am being serious.
About 2yrs ago I asked the boards to recommend a nice starter record player. I trusted the opinion of a poster here and I purchased this one.
All my records newer and older play just fine.
I know there are wayyyyyy better players out there but for my ears this does the job.

On the other hand, if you used a crappy old needle, it's quite possible that your new needle would sit lower in the groove than your old one ever did. In other words, it's basically down in virgin vinyl territory. Could sound better than ever!
  • I know a bit about this, go to Sound Stage Direct's web site, ask for Seth, tell him Brion sent you, and ask for a good price on a VPI Traveler Turntable, get the Red Orfton, he usually cuts a deal if you buy a deck and an amp. You will need an amp (I recommend Marantz) or a Huge pre-amp, and I don't even think a preamp will do it justice. You pay for what you get in the vinyl world.

Soundstage Direct just had a program where you can trade in for FULL price your existing turntable. Couldn't pass it up so turned in my Rega RP1 for a VPI Scout 1.1. I mentioned I buy a bunch of albums from their website and he gave me the blue ortolan cartridge for the price of red. Just got it in the mail yesterday and all set up with some Zeppelin playing as I type...

You might not see immediate damage, but in time you will. This is a good article that pretty clearly explains some of the disadvantages of playing records of any worth on a Crosley. best-turntables.com/avoid-crosley-turntables/

Try it again on a PJ20 colored record. This time put a brick on the tonearm. This is guaranteed to get you the deepest sound possible.
