MUSICIANS YOU ADMIRE...

edited October 2015 in Other Music
And I dont mean their music ability or talent either, im talking how they conduct themselves, their mannerisms, their intelligence what type of person they generally come across as being. I also mean good deeds they do etc.

so i guess most of us would include Eddie Vedder for being genuine and he seems to have this honesty and thoughtfulness about him when he speaks etc.

but who else do you admire for these reasons... for example the other day i was watching a Gene Simmons interview, now im not a big Kiss fan at all but i thought he come across as being charismatic and very likeable which got me wondering about the other likeable musicians out there

Henry Rollins comes to mind first who, by the way, once suggested that meeting your favorite musicians is not always a great idea because you might catch them in a bad moment and be super disappointed. I'm sure I've said a lot about respecting Henry elsewhere.

Grace Slick- everything I've ever seen her in where she is talking is amazing. What a great, smart, together lady! I'm guessing she is very cool and likable.

I met Paul Westerberg briefly. He was super nice. Very tired though. I think Celia wanted to make him chicken soup and pat him on the head.

It's hard to say how personable someone on a stage is though unless you know them at least a little bit personally. Most musicians I've met seem very cool I guess I'm listening to the right kind of stuff.

Myles Kennedy. So talented and yet so humble. I went to a small acoustic show a few years ago in NYC and he agreed to do an impromptu meet & greet that wasn't pre-planned. He spent time talking to every single person, signed anything anyone wanted him to, and took multiple pictures. I can't wait for his solo album to come out. I really want to hear his music, rather than him writing for Slash or Alter Bridge.

And Patti Smith because she just does her thing and doesn't give a shit. She's so goofy and I love it. Her crush on David Tennant cracks me up :)
  • Ian McKaye. When you hear him talk you can't help but listen.

Obviously Eddie Vedder, yes. Dave Matthews as well. Besides DMB being my 2nd favorite band, Dave truly seems like he cares--about music, people, causes. I admire him a lot.

    Tom Petty

Makes an album for a major record label that doesn't sugar coat how bad mainstream music is. That takes major cajones. Dave Grohl said he's a bad ass and George Harrison said there's no bullshit to him. They're both right.

Let's not forget his war on record price increases when Hard Promises came out.

He is for sure my #1 music hero. And i am finally seeing him for the first time in 2 days!!! And I got pit tix, so I will get the up close experience. I am so excited!! I respect him so much because he speaks up for what he believes in through his music, unabashedly, consistently, and doesn't give a flying fuck if people don't like it. He will not shut up, and fuck off if you think he should. Plus, he's just awesome and so is his music. He's never afraid to experiment, which is important to me. So many musicians are afraid of that.
Btw, I love his new album. The Monsanto Years is SO Neil Young - it's great.

    Dave Grohl

I met him after a show he played w/ QOTSA in 2002. He wasn't just gracious, he was genuinely nice & down to earth.

I don't love every musical project he does, but he is hands down one of my favorite musicians / rocks stars / celebrities of all time.

Stick It Out is another good one of his.

Agree with everyone on Neil Young as well. He's telling it like it is about Monsanto.

John Fogerty deserves a mention as well.

    Excellent! Have a great time!

I missed an early chance to see NY when he was with Buffalo Springfield. They came and played at our high school and I was on stage crew and ran the main spot on Neil. After the show our crew got to meet the whole band but nobody had told me that so by the time I broke down all the gear it was too late. That still irks me all these years later. :anguished:

I agree with many who have already been mentioned. As far as newer artists, I have a deep profound incredible respect for Andrew Hozier-Byrne (Hozier). You may be sick as hell of "Take Me To Church", but this guy is so talented, and has made several artistic and business decisions that are highly unusual for a new artist, like taking on oppressive institutions and not appearing in his own first video as a start. His music is also 90% deeply layered and complex topics. His song "Cherry Wine" sounds like a bluesy love song, when it's about female-on-male domestic violence.

He's used twitter to be outspoken about his position on political issues he feels strongly about, and even called out a couple of Irish well-known folks on their hypocrisy on topics.

He has done things his way, toured for going on 2 yrs straight, and used to come out after just about EVERY.SINGLE.SHOW and patiently meet, give autographs to and pose with EVERY.SINGLE.FAN who lined up. Every show. I've been around a long time, never known an artist who sold out those venues while he was still on his previous tour, never seen an artist at those strings of sold out shows do that.

He's also steered clear of what could have been obvious celebrity connections. Taylor Swift tried HARD to get him to publicly focus on her, and he just was polite, humble and grateful for her support of his art, and got the hell out of town a couple of times. And he's intellectually brilliant, a total nerd, a self-described "gangly introvert", and only 25 freakin'' years old.

He's gonna be around for a long time hopefully, and he has my deep respect right now. And yeah, I'm kind of a fan of his music. ;)

Agreed yellowledbetterman80 and tempo_n_groove. I saw Issak's band play at the I-Beam on Haight Street in San Francisco in the early 80's. I think this was just prior to his first record signing and he played with that hungry look. He and his band were definitely hard working and the I-Beam was pretty wild, usually fun but the crowds could be a really tough. It was kind of well known for being a punk/gay club but I didn't care either way- they had some really good bands play there- everything from Isaak to the Bongos to the Ventures. They played some mean rock and roll and rockabilly mixed with a few power pop tunes. Good show. Oh, and I remember the seating went right up to this crowded little stage. The place had a bar and cocktail tables and I remember being really, really close to his side of the stage.
