Why More Students Are Going Abroad For College

High tuition rates at home drive students to seek cheaper alternatives in countries like Canada and the U.K.

I applaud anyone who is being thoughtful about the cost of their degree. More people need to be smart consumers and push back against the rising cost of American education mills. A remedy to this is community colleges to get most or all of the general electives out of the way especially if they can be transferred in state.

This will give you an idea of how tuition rates have sky rocketed:
For my first semester at San Francisco State University, the tuition for the 15 units I enrolled in cost $50.00
Accounting for inflation, that would equal $325.68 today.
However, the current cost of enrollment at that same school for 15 units (I think they call them credits now) today is $3238.00
In other words, the cost of enrolling in that same school is now TEN times what it was 46 years ago.

That's amazing......my daughter was attending University of Maryland she is in community college this year due to a major health issue. Anyway, for her first year being out state (from here in Florida) it cost $42k however now she's registered in state of MD. The cost drops to $20k what a ripoff. They get you if you are not living in Maryland, she will return next year if all continues well with her health.

I did a Huffington Post piece about college tuition in state schools. California, among others, is a huge joke. They're so desperate for $$ they're admitting more out of state students so a lot of in state students get screwed over.

    Good piece!

It's a shame to see the UC system turn on it's own residents like that.

Thanks. I heard from a bunch of people it's the same in Michigan, Maryland, Virginia, a whole bunch of states. Very sad. Also these schools are admitting many kids from out of the country. Again, just for the $$$.

My bill for this semester (CUNY Undergrad - Senior College) was $3390.10
    4 classes/12 credits.

70% of the faculty at my school are adjuncts.

If it were a feasible option for my personal situation, I would've looked into college in Germany when I heard they made tuition free.

When I went to UCLA for grad school (back in the dark ages), once I was in-state - I think my tuition was about $1,200 a year. A year. LA was expensive and I worked the whole time I was in school, but I wasn't in debt up to my eyeballs. After graduate school!

Yes that it can be free however one better have a good understanding and knowledge of the German language. Not ALL classes are in English.

Unless I was going to be a doctor, I wouldn't bother with college these days. The cost goes up every single year at a rate that far surpasses salary increases and the value/worth continues to decline as people have free, ready-access to much of the "knowledge" that college imparts simply by accessing the internet.

The fix is simple. Allow student loans to be absolved via bankruptcy. The huge loans will go away and tuition will go way down or the universities will go out of business.
