So glad the EPA is there to protect the environment.

What would we ever do without them??? Oh that's right...we'd probably be able to kayak and drink water from the now poisoned Animas River. Stay tuned for the bonus round when it hits Lake Powell. You guys are fucking awesome!!

Yes very sad. Beautiful part of the country. It could potentially have long term effects even down here in Arizona. Horrible situation.

Terrible- sorry to hear about this. The EPA is often to environmental protection what a row of water balloons is to a cliff barrier on a highway.

That said, it's like any big agency- some of the people who work for it are complete idiots, some make major mistakes and some are truly excellent at what they do. It's like the US Forest Service which has often been enemy No. 1 to hard core environmentalists. And yet I've personally known Forest Service workers who are gold star heroes in the world of forest protection.

In any case, I'm sorry to hear this happened in you neck of the woods and in such a beautiful part of the country. That totally sucks.

It is a seriously terrible situation but the original post is... I don't have the word for it... It is dripping with sarcasm and sort of childish.

The fact of the matter is that without the EPA, the amount of pollution and number of poison rivers would be exponentially higher. That is irrefutable to anyone with a strong grasp on this nations history.

    The EPA is a joke.

In a lot of ways it is, but it is an absolutely necessary organization.

And just like unions, if it was abolished tomorrow we would see decades of progress undone in a handfull of years.

Yeah, oh man, the environment would be trashed in a heart beat if that happened. Why would we even consider dismantling the EPA? It makes soooo much more sense to get it back on track. Maybe the one good thing to come out of this tragic event will be for the people- us- to put the pressure on to make the needed corrections.

So if the EPA was disbanded tomorrow, the world would come to an end in 4.5 million years instead of 4.51 million years? Is that what I'm gathering from the posts above? I don't think so.

It's nothing to do with the lifespan of the planet, or even it's long-term heritability.
It's about having clean water and air for day to day living and recreation.
Perhaps you never learned about the polution issues, and ensuing disease, that afflicted this nation prior to the 70's, when we started cleaning shit up...Maybe you never heard of the Cuyahoga river, Bubbly Creek, or Donora, PA...
Maybe you should do some research if you haven't, then you wouldn't be so quick to throw the baby out with the bath water.

The world probably won't end with or without the EPA. No, but how healthy would the world be that our kids inherit and how would it affect their lives?
