So is this a thing now in America? I know marriage is considered a punishment to some, but c'mon! Also ordered by judge to write a bible quote daily...

Have I somehow missed CNN becoming a parody site? Is this actually a link to The Onion in disguise?

The mind boggles at the antics of some of the American judiciary.

I don't know which is odder - the get-married decree or the bible verse exercise (though I do get its specific message).

Yeah, my first thought was seeing the judge say, "OK son, now go write on the black board this Bible verse 25 times..." Dumb.

And then the guy opts for 15 days jail and the judge says "Nope". What a pro.

  • Nothing wrong with this judgement at all,
In fact this is a well thought, sound decision and another progressive step in the right direction for the citizens of Texas.
Nineteen is the perfect age to be married.
Judiciary outcomes like these will continue to keep this state ahead of the world.
Donald Trump need look no further for issues to speak about other than this case and use this as a shining example of what would make America great again.

No way. This can't be legal. And why if the fuck would the judge punish the woman by saying a man who beats her has to marry her?? There is so much wrong here... is this even real??

I think he beat up her ex, not her. Unless I misread.

CNN has become pretty awful, but it seems this is legit.

I grew up with a kid who took the year in county jail vs five years probation. I get it, but I probably wouldn't make that choice.

Well of this actually happened, it's legitimately newsworthy (and reporting non-newsworthy items is not something I think CNN does anyway).

Ahhh. Well that does change things... but that is still fucked up and surely can't be upheld. Though the judge might have just been joking??

Well, yes, I should not be so harsh on Texas. I mean, after all, look at all the great music that came out of Texas- Ornette Coleman, Larry Coryell, Stevie Ray and Jimmie Vaughn, Lightnin' Hopkins, Roky Erickson, Buddy Hollie, Janis Joplin, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Butthole Surfers, George Jones, The Dixie Chicks, Roy Orbison, and on and on! OK, God Bless Texas for that!

Yeah. Let's just say he wasn't looking to change his ways and his lifestyle would have been difficult with probation hanging around his neck. Did nine months with good behavior, but still...

edit - if I had a choice between a year in jail and marriage, I'd struggle with it.

If a judge ever asks you if your woman is worth it, the correct answer is hell no.

(smile) No, I just think marriage is hard enough without a court-appointed husband.

I hope they don't end up awake at nights asking themselves,"if only there would've been a third option... like reciting bible verses in a shark tank or listening to Sandi Patty while being waterboarded."

The sharks have civil liberties, too. They don't deserve to be subject to biblical verses.

One year sentence v. life sentence... easy choice.

This judge is wrong on so many levels, I don't even know where to begin. Ugh!

If they divorce, does that violate his terms of probation and he has to serve his sentence?

just cause a judge gave the option to marry does not make it legal and if those two are really marring because the judge said so......really ??? the whole story read like a 10 cent paper back novel.

Yeah agree. Didn't have a problem with bible verse either and you know how I feel on the subject.
