New Home Campaign Advisory Committee co-chairs Ashley O’Connor McCready and Mike McCready are key players in both Seattle’s music and philanthropic scenes. Not only is Mike the guitarist in Pearl Jam, the McCreadys play an active role supporting a variety of worthy nonprofits, including Camp Oasis and the NW chapter of the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America, Team Gleason, Treehouse for Kids, and the Seattle Symphony.

Most importantly, they’ve been the driving forces behind the Raw Power KEXP event at Pike Place Market on Sunday, August 23. Getting four of Seattle’s biggest music icons to play music together on the roof of the Pike Place Market is no easy feat, friends!

Ashley says she and Mike were “very inspired and excited to help with the campaign” when asked to serve as co-chairs of the New Home CAC. They’re particularly enthusiastic about KEXP’s plans to partner with organizations like the Vera Project, UW, and local schools in the New Home, which they hope will offset “depleted music programs in Seattle.”

“KEXP’s New Home will create more community partnerships through education and music,” says Ashley, “allowing kids to come in and have great learning opportunities that will hopefully inspire a new generation of music lovers.”

Even though they’re in the thick of the international rock scene, Mike and Ashley get just as excited about discovering new music—from all eras—as everyone else in the KEXP Community.

“A few months ago we became excited about two of our favorite new bands, the Preatures and Courtney Barnett,” Ashley recalls. They mentioned their passion for the latter when they ran into The Morning Show host John Richards, and were surprised to learn he’d been streaming their music directly from the band’s YouTube videos because he couldn’t find it anywhere else. “That just isn’t something that other current stations are doing, which is what makes KEXP so great.”

In addition to Courtney Barnett or the Preatures, some of the other artists Mike and Ashely would love to play the inaugural New Home in-studio session include St. Vincent, Brandi Carlisle, Reignwolf, the Young Evils … “The list could go on and on,” admits Ashley. “We’re sure that KEXP will find a great band for that spot.”

Thank you to the McCreadys for volunteering their considerable experience and resources to this campaign, and to all the Groundbreakers who are helping us build KEXP’s New Home.
