Two hundred pilot whales slaughtered on Danish Faroe Islands.

WARNING: THE LINK BELOW CONTAINS GRAPHIC AND DISTURBING FOOTAGE OF WHALE SLAUGHTER.

I DO NOT enjoy starting threads like this but this kind of insanity needs to be exposed, called out and discontinued. The actual number of whales killed has gone up.

http://www.seashepherdglobal.org/news-and-commentary/news/graphic-footage-shows-mass-slaughter-of-pilot-whales-in-the-faroe-islands.html

Yesterday, approximately two hundred pilot whales were slaughtered on the killing beaches of the Danish Faroe Islands. The slaughters, known by the traditional Faroese term ‘grindadráp,’ took place over two separate drive hunts which ended at the Bøur and Tórshavn killing beaches, making this the single bloodiest day in the archipelago this year.

Three Sea Shepherd crewmembers from South Africa, Belgium and Luxembourg have been arrested and another two, from Italy and France, have been detained for standing in defense of the whales that were targeted for slaughter.

At approximately 1400 local time, a massive pod of around 150 pilot whales was spotted close to the Mykines in the west of the Faroe Islands archipelago. A flotilla of small boats drove the pod to Bøur. The awaiting crowds of killers then dragged the animals violently on to the killing beach.

Humans are vicious tickets. We suck.

  • Without me googling, can someone explain to me exactly what the harvest of these whales reaps?

    It's a cultural "tradition".

I wasnt sure what that link was gonna show. All that blood. Disgusting. I did not watch the video. And the people that tried to protest/protect are detained?
Oh please let it rain today.

I know it's cultural, but I am curious to know if they harvest the animals in useful ways... or if it's an absolute slaughter for some good times. If it's once a year and the animals are processed in such a way that their deaths were purposeful, I could understand a bit better.

Don't get me wrong- I'm appalled. This seemed to be a rather festive and joyous event and all I can make of it is a bunch of slaughtered, beautiful animals and a sea of red. Saying that though... there are other cultures out there that look at the way we treat animals and do not have flattering things to say about us as well. RG summed it up nicely- humans aren't that great at times.

They call it a "traditional community hunt". The line of thinking is that since they've been doing this for hundreds of years and it's "tradition", it must be ok.

No need to watch the video- just lots of carnage. The protesters were primarily European*. Seven were arrested.

This is not like fishing or even careful hunting. It's a spectacle. Villagers come out to watch as the whales are herding into the cove and eager to-the-slaughter "hunters" wade out in wetsuits and violently stab the whales with knives and harpoons in a massive act of bloodthirsty, violent behavior.

    * 253 Pilot whales died this last week.

Seven Sea Shepherd volunteers have been arrested.

    Rosie Kunneke of South Africa
    Christophe Bondue of Belgium
    Marianna Baldo of Italy
    Xavier Figarella of France
    Kevin Schiltz of Luxembourg
Susan Larsen of the United States
    Tom Strerath of Germany

Ugh. Thanks for raising the issue. This makes my blood boil. Savages with no humanity. The pictures of the red water were terrifying. This is disturbing stuff. I understand that animals are killed every day for food, and acknowledge my part in that chain, but this type of slaughter is just sickening. I guess I don't understand the need to make killing a spectacle.

Thank you, Jeff. That's exactly my though, Jeff, that this mass slaughter is a spectacle that shows no respect for life. This is not at all, for example, how we would see Inuit people procure their food and who have many songs that show respect and gratefulness toward the animals that sustains them.

I'm with you guys. It's horrific. If you feel like you want to eat a whale... then go get 'one' with your crew and share it with your community (I guess).

I truly am curious to know what they do with the whales. How are the animals used after killed? As brutal as it is... I'm hoping that the slaughter isn't only for spectacle and fun.

Like... do Chadwick and I have to go open up a can of whoopass on the Faroe Islands or what?

    Tradition?
Pretty sure using power boats equipped with GPS to locate and coral pods of whales to a waiting bunch of savage killers wasn't available to pass on.
I really do think that there are two sets of humans.

Yes! Not to mention wet suits!
