Wozniak: Robots Will Rule, Treat Us As Their Pets

Yet another opinion on the future of robotics!

Wozniak: Robots will rule, treat us as their pets

image
Speaking at the Freescale Technology Forum about the growth of artificial intelligence, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak has claimed that one day robots will be in charge and will treat humans as their pets.

After previously warning about the dangers of AI, "the woz" now believes that the robots we create will learn to protect and nurture us in much the same way that we look after dogs today.

"They’re going to be smarter than us and if they’re smarter than us then they’ll realize they need us", he said. "We want to be the family pet and be taken care of all the time. I got this idea a few years ago and so I started feeding my dog fillet steak and chicken every night because 'do unto others'".
Wozniak’s acceptance seems to go against the general feeling that AI is something to be feared rather than promoted.

SpaceX and Tesla founder Elon Musk recently went so far as to say that we are "summoning the demon" with regards to robots and AI, voicing fears that Google boss Larry Page could accidentally create humanity-destroying machines.

And he’s not alone, as Microsoft founder Bill Gates and Professor Stephen Hawking have also confessed to having concerns about the rise of AI, prompting a widespread debate as to whether we should fear artificial intelligence.

I do believe something of this sort will happen our future, I won't be here your children and mine might have to face this nightmare.

Sounds kind of nice, lol. I've often been envious of how cushy my cat's life is.

Ultimately, I only think we ought to fear a 'robot uprising' because we have this human tendency to not show the same respect to our subservients as our equals. I like Woz's line about how he caters to his dog because 'do unto others'. If we actually practiced giving the respect we'd like others to give us, regardless of status, the global landscape (political, economic, inter-specie relationships, etc) would be very different than it is right now. For the better.

We are already their pets, feeding them energy via internet-fourms and our facebook-phones..

The question is, will we have:
-a utopian world run by robots,
-a dystopian world run by robots,
-a ruined world once inhabited by humans that has collapsed just prior to robots being able to take it over,
-a healthy, ecologically balanced world containing remnants of a collapsed civilization in which humans have become extinct,
-or or a healthy ecologically balanced world inhabited by humans?

We could become the machines and keep a few unadulterated humans as pets. Wouldn't that be a strange twist? It sounds like science fiction, true, but it's already closing in on becoming possible. Micro machines, nano robotics in mice. What's next? It's easy to guess.

Good article here on that from earlier this year:

    http://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/scientists-test-out-tiny-robots-meant-travel-inside-human-body-180953937/?no-ist

Another good read on the subject: Bill McKibben, Enough: Staying Human in an Engineered Age (2004, St. Martin's Griffin) a book that has been criticized as having some scientific inaccuracies. But that misses the point. McKibben asks the right questions and presents possibilities a lot of people just don't want to hear- those are the attributes of the book that are more relevant than ever.

I'm a bit surprised we don't hear more about this sort of thing.
