How is the Berlin '06 bootleg?

Hey everyone. This was the only show that I had the chance of attending over in Europe however do to unfortunate circumstances, I wasn't able to go. So, I've always wanted to buy this boot to see what I was missing out on. Unfortunately, I am at the point in my life where coming across $15 that I can spare for pleasure is very rare, and the first thing on my list has always been this boot. But there a few things that I would like to ask before I actually go ahead and do it:

1) Does Ed speak any German or do anything German related at this show? A reason for me getting this would be anything with my culture being incorporated into the show, and I think hearing Ed speak German would be a really awesome thing for me, as I'd actually be able to understand it. (Who wants to hear him speak Italian!? ;)) I know this may be a goofy reason to buy a boot, but it's important to me atleast.

2) Is the quality for this boot any good? I don't want to waste me money on something barely audible and unclear. Or if it's like the Athens boot which apparently has obnoxious people yelling.

3) Is there any other European boot, or any boot for that matter, that is so much more amazing than Berlin that it needs to be first on my list no matter what, and any other personal reason for me getting the Berlin show would be completely overshadowed by the awesomeness of some other show?

Thanks :)

    1) yes, Ed spoke German (but I don't so not sure what he said..nothing very important though)
    2) it's as good quality as the other, (though I haven't listened to it in full yet...not on my top list). only Athens is to be avoided anyway
    3) oh dear:
Dublin (awesome crowd, Education, Boys are back in Town), Reading (v. special moment both for us and the band: Crown of Thorns as proof, Iron Man on the ukulele, sang by the crowd :)), Lisbon (both though better setlist night 2, great crowd again), Marseilles (best setlist of the leg, though lots of fucks-up...but I like those ;)), Milan (crowd, first Picture in the frame, Black), Prague (the Man encore, amongst other), Zagreb (many rarities, and a fav for anyone who attended..can't be objective on the boot I'm afraid)...but you'll get everyone putting the show they attended.
Berlin was good, good crowd but the setlist was somewhat average.

and Oz had some good shows: Newcastle and Sydney III stand out for me.

    I'm not helping am I?
  • Marseille or Pistoia.

Both excellent shows. I think the Berlin show in 96 is better than the one in 06.

I would take a live version of 'Who You Are' over anything they played that night.

Out of the three shows I've been to Berlin was without a doubt the best. The boot is great although the crowd is not as loud as it was being there. Eddie spoke two times in german. I remember he said something about the nice weather and the beautiful day in Berlin. During the encore he again spoke in german about how Johnny Ramone loved it in germany at that he sings the next song to the sky for Johnny. Then they played Come Back.
A few other boots are maybe a bit better (Dublin,Milan,Pistoia,Zagreb come to mind) but since you seem to have a connection to germany and this very concert you should go with the Berlin boot.

I have attended the show in Berlin, and it was a very good one, a bit different from others. They played 29 titles and they began with Go, which was surprising to me. The quality of the bootleg is fine really. Eddie Vedder speaks German twice: Before Small Town (greeting the fans, thanking them, telling them they played the location before, introducing the Black Keys), and before Come Back (speaking about losing a good friend, Johnny Ramone, and Germany, dedicating the song to him as well). Eddie Vedder talking German and dedicating this song to Johnny Ramone, to me is one of the most emotional moments I have ever experienced at a Pearl Jam show really. I remember, he was looking up to the sky and saying (in German): "I hope he can hear it." I never regret buying this, but hear for yourself. I don't want to spoil, so I won't write a transcript here... I hope this helps.

because someone was roughly translating for me then and I could grasp enough words here and there, like 'Johnny Ramone' (having heard the same kind of things several times in other more accessible, to me, languages) to know what the general subject matter was.

that's the one qualm I have with Ed 'speaking' (reading in fact) other languages (which is a very thoughtful touch and afaik he did a pretty good job of): it killed the spontaneity of his banter (and English is my second language so no, I'm not biased that way).

In Berlin, he did fall into English to say that it was better singing than even Italy (whether he was playing to the crowd or really meant it I'll leave to you)...but he was more chatty and spontaneous in Ireland and the UK..evidently.

He actually says: "I feel the need to say that you are singing perfectly tonight. Perfectly, and perfectly loud. And… about two weeks ago, we told the Italians, they might have been the best singers, but I think, tonight… I'm not saying that they sing dirty or anything…"

I was just going from memory...which is better than Ed's because they were in Italy only 3 nights before! Milan (arguably the best singing there) was not even a week ago ;)

Yeah, I know, I thought the same. But when you travel around that much, things like that can happen… However, I think the singing in Berlin was indeed perfectly loud. But in the end, no one can tell, no one can compare anyway.

The concert you have attended is always a special one, simply because it was "your" concert -- but to be honest, I didn't like the setlist at all. It was a pretty hard one really. Not that I don't like that stuff, but Go as the opener was pretty much representative for the whole show. Maybe it's a German thing, I'm sure most of the people were satisfied.

I wished he had played a little more smoother stuff, but that is just me. So, I left the front pretty early. It was just too heavy in the crowd, and I decided to trade sound for space ;-) I mean, it was hardly possible to stand or breathe. And I didn't have the patience to wait for the first excitement to damp. Somehow I had to think about Roskilde as well, and that was it.

ha ha... why what went on in lisbo? .... i have not listened to the two lisbons yet but will get round to it and am sure i'll concur. the more i listen to prague the more i find in it, i wanna know what he says between each man song, he's mumblin all the time... milan has lost it's appeal a bit. but of course is still kickass. and berlin is good.
    Salut baloo
  • The bootleg is fine, sound quality is cracking and the crowd are pretty good.

If you like the Berlin setlist though, I'd buy Bern, cuz it's similarly heavy but with a few rarities here and there, and a crowd to rival most of the Euro-shows (Milan exempt).

I highly recommend: Dublin, Madrid, Milan, Zagreb, Reading, Pistoia and Bologna.

AVOID Athens and Verona. Sound awful.
  • How can you tell when you don't understand a word?

That's quite easy -LOL- if you are a foreigner and you don't understand a word, but the reaction from the rest of the audience is screaming and shouting, i'm pretty sure Ed was speaking the native language ;)
I feel very close to you all now; so close I could almost... loan you money. Really. it goes that deep.

Maybe you had to be there, Eddie himself said that Berlin had the best singer audience from the tour (he even suggested that they thought Italy was going to be undefeatable for that matter).

    So, YES get the bootleg!!!

Great Boot! - the sound is cracking, the band play flawless, the crowd is/was great (hard to hear the real noise due to the mix) if you like setlist is a matter of taste.....but anyway it´s one of the better boots from europe. Footsteps, Comeback and Present tense are highlights for me.

(the venue and the weather made the show absolute amazing!)
Run away my son. See it all. Oh see the world.
