'It's Not Just Keystone': Midwest Gears Up for Massive Tar Sands Fight

Big oil continues to push to develop tar sands and pump dirty oil across North America. They are determined to pump oil through beautiful places like Minnesota and frack the hell out of California and other places. This tells us they are are desperate for any way to continue to make huge profits off a bad idea. It tells us they are desperate to squeeze every last drop oil out of the planet. The irony is, there are plenty of profits to be made and jobs to be created through developing alternative energy sources. And there is a lot of sense to the idea of cutting back our energy consumption in the first place. So good for these people for speaking out against tar sand pipelines in Minnesota (home of that great band, The Replacements!)

A large protest in Minnesota this weekend is designed to show that the resistance to tar sands goes well beyond Keystone XL, as numerous environmental and social justice groups come together with Indigenous communities across the region to make their unified demands clear to all: "keep toxic tar sands out of America's Heartland, fight for clean water, clean energy, and a safe climate."

Haven't you heard the news Brian? We have a new government here in Alberta, Gateway and Keystone are all but dead now.

    http://calgaryherald.com/news/politics/notley-works-to-build-calgary-support-but-pipeline-and-royalty-issues-loom

But Notley said that if she becomes premier, she won’t make trips to Washington, D.C., to lobby for the TransCanada Corp.’s stalled Keystone XL pipeline, which is proposed to run from the oilsands to the U.S. Gulf Coast.

She said there is “no realistic objective” to the visits since the pipeline is caught up in U.S. domestic politics and she wants to see a greater focus on shipping refined crude products rather than raw bitumen.

PC premiers have also been pushing for the completion of Enbridge’s Northern Gateway pipeline, but Notley said that would stop on her watch.

“Gateway is not the right decision. I think that there’s just too much environmental sensitivity there and I think there’s a genuine concern by the indigenous communities,” she said. “It’s not going to go ahead. I think most people know that.”

The funny thing is....I happen to be a good friend of Alberta's new Environment Minister. Things are changing for the better here, and by proxy....everywhere.

I will keep my ear to the ground for you.

    ;)
