So a magistrate, an assistant register of deeds, and a deputy register of deeds walk into a bar …

What the hell!
If the North Carolina House of Representatives follows the path of the North Carolina Senate in overriding the NC Governor’s veto of Senate Bill 2, certain public officials will be allowed to refuse to perform marriage ceremonies or issue marriage licenses due to “sincerely held religious objection” without any blowback at all. They still collect full pay with sick pay, vacation pay and future retirement benefits, but now they will receive the extra bonus of being able to pass their personal religious judgments on the citizens of North Carolina who seek their public services.

At least NC Governor McCrory vetoed the bill. There is some sanity in North Carolina politics, just not enough.

Cool that McCrory promised to veto the bill, not cool that so many people still, due to their personal religious or sexual biases, object to certain people getting married. That kind of bias seems perplexing.

Love that thread title, Asterisk, haha!

  • For the North Carolina legislature to pass a bill allowing public employees to refuse to perform marriages “based upon any sincerely held religious objection” is outrageous. Same goes for those public employees being allowed to refuse to issue marriage licenses based on their personal beliefs, not the law of the State of North Carolina. These employees are paid by the tax-payers – all of the tax-payers. If these public employees will not perform the duties of the job, why shouldn’t they be shown the door? There must be plenty of people in North Carolina who would like a government job with good pay, benefits and a retirement plan.

And what about the North Carolina public sector employees with any ‘insincerely’ held religious objection to the type of work they were hired to perform? Shall we just consider them slackers if their objection does not measure high enough on the sincere-o-meter?

Is there anyone on this forum from North Carolina? What do the citizens there think of the Governor’s veto of Senate Bill 2, and the legislature going for the override?
