Ed's Voice - tour 08

From the boot I heard of the first show in Florida, it seems Ed's voice is missing. In my opinion, he's either hit or miss, and latley he's been miss. I heard he did a great job during his solo tour, but now he's back with the band, and, I don't know, maybe he just can't hear himself that well. I wanted to see what people that have seen the shows so far think of his current voice. I'm going to Mansfield 2, so hopefully he'll have all the bugs worked out by then.

I'm listening to the Bonnaroo audience recording and Ed sounds fine to me.
I think that Ed's best in the last ten years was from San Diego up through to Athens on the '06 tour, so nothing can compare to then in my opinion but he sounds great this year from what i'm hearing.

Ah yes..the 'Ed Voice' thread. Shouldn't see too many of these eh? ;-)
  • From what I've heard from this tour (crappy audience vids and recordings), Ed's vocals are some of the best I've heard.....

Might be better than it was in 2005....Which was amazing.

I was actually struck by how good he sounded at roo and it's not something I'm normally concerned with. As bad as he sounded in Hawaii in '06 the show still rocked. This time around, I'm sure the rest had to help him recoup.
    90 shows and counting...some of my favs: Randall's Island night 2, Milwaukee '95 night 2, Hawaii '06, St Johns '05, PJ20!

Ed's voice is fine. Now if he can only remember the f@cking words to his songs (West Palm had a lyrical flub in just about every song,) things will be fine.

Smoking and age will catch up to us all one day. It sounds like Ed's day is just about here from the little bit I've heard of the tour so far.

I'll have a better opinion after my first show tomorrow night in Camden.

I said the exact same thing. And the Bonnaroo aud boot sounds awesome.
My first PJ show to witness was at Bonnaroo. How is that for lucky?

i was at bonnaroo and was suprised at how good eddie's voice sounded. Not saying he sounds like crap but it sounded very energetic and on. Can't say that i know what you're talking about.

The songs I've been hearing sound good.

Obviously, you are exaggerating your critical opinion when you say his voice is missing.

Sounded great to me at the 2 shows I was at...
    Conversations getting dull
There's a constant ringing in my ears
Sense of humor's void and numb
    And I'm bored to tears.......
  • This thread is silly.

    Ed's voice doesn't sound good?

He sounds great. Bonnaroo sounds fantastic and so does WPB.

Somebody needs to get the peanut butter out of their ears. I can't make it to any of the shows, so I eagerly wait for people to upload them to Youtube, and so far they have all sounded freaking awesome.

I thought to myself during the WPB show, "Damn, Ed sounds good..." then the next night in Tampa I thought to myself, "Man, this might be the best Ed has sounded in years!"

If you think he sounds anything other than awesome, you obviously haven't been to a live show this tour.

historically it's taken eddie a few shows to hit his stride vocally. i haven't heard much from this tour yet, aside from some youtube stuff and a few songs from the bonnaroo "tape" floating around, but i think he's coming along nicely. i did think he was a little rough on life wasted from roo, broadcasted on fuse, but then again you know he was partying all day and was maybe a little wiped.

every tour i always fear that this will be the time when they start to lose it, but so far, it hasn't happened.
i'm more a fan of popular bands.. like the bee-gees, pearl jam

Have you heard the audience recordings yet?

I was at Columbia and thought he sounded pretty strong. He definitely doesn't sound as good as he did back in 98-00, but that is what age/smokes/touring/hard living will do to you if you don't take care of the voice.

To me, I hear this when I listen to 2006 boots:

    1. He has zero lung capacity on alot of songs. He sounds out of breath alot lately.
    2. He doesn't seem to really hold notes or pronunciate too well anymore. What I mean is when he goes from a word like "Meeeeaaahhhhhzzzz". Just sounds wierd and doesn't seem like the Ed of previous tours (i.e., on point and concise with his delivery).
    3. Screaming. This is one that anyone would expect to dwindle with age and why not? He still has some good screams and yells in his pipes.
    4. Ed is alot more active on stage now, dancing and playing guitar. I think that really fucks with his focus these days.

In Columbia SC I remember thinking quite a few times, very specifically, how good his voice sounded that night. His vocals were excellent in my opinion. It's hard to tell sometimes when the crowd around you is screaming along to all the words so maybe my audio perspective was warped, but I really wouldn't lose too much sleep with your worries about his vocal abilities.

I actually thought this was going to be one of the "Wow! Ed's voice sounds better than ever" threads.

Because, based on the kind of crappy you tube videos I've seen from this tour, his voice kind of sounds, you know, better than ever.

After watching some youtube vids from 'roo I must say his voice sounds even better than 06. He isnt mumbling quite as much. This version of DTE kicks ass

i was at wpb & tampa. other than fucking up a couple lyrics, is ok
Down the street you can hear her scream youre a disgrace
As she slams the door in his drunken face
    And now he stands outside
And all the neighbours start to gossip and drool
He cries oh, girl you must be mad,
What happened to the sweet love you and me had?
Against the door he leans and starts a scene,
And his tears fall and burn the garden green

He definitely sounds better than he did in 2006, which I thought was his worst tour yet.

    depends.

columbia, as has been said, i was actually surprised how great he sounded. better than i expected, even.

next day, in vabch, not so much. before jeremy, he actually said "the voice is kinda going i might need your help with this one". true, he might have been encouraging a sing-along, but he actually said his voice was giving out on him that night.

Didn't one of the reviews from Boon mention Ed's larynx being made out of the same material as they use to make the balck boxes for airplanes? :)

    Thought that was good....

    Sounds great to me!
