Very bizarre. This is almost funny until you think about the pressure these kids must be under.

600 Indian Students Expelled After Parents Seen Scaling School Buildings To Help Them Cheat

image

PATNA, India (AP) — Around 600 high school students in eastern India have been expelled for cheating on pressure-packed 10th grade examinations this week, education authorities said Friday.

The incident has gotten widespread attention after Indian television footage showed parents and friends of students scaling the outer walls of school buildings to pass cheat sheets to students inside taking exams.

More than 1.4 million 10th graders are sitting for the test at more than 1,200 high schools across the state. They face tremendous pressure because they must pass the exams to continue their education.

that is just crazy. those parents risked their lives by climbing up there just to help their kid pass a test.

    Imagine that.

Doesn't happen round these parts lately.

What those parents are doing is not called "helping". It's called "enabling" and by that I mean:

"In a negative sense, 'enabling' can describe dysfunctional behavior approaches that are intended to help resolve a specific problem but in fact may perpetuate or exacerbate the problem."

  • In a positive sense parents in this world have realized that enabling our youth will yield positive outcomes.

Another thought on what I just said is this: I worked with a college prof a number of years ago who one day told our students, "If you were to find a way to get around the assignment I give you in an honest manner and still get a passing grade and learn the subject matter well* in this class I would not hold you back from receiving your diploma and certificate. If you are that clever and can still learn the subject matter well, that's good enough for me." I don't think she would call having someone scale the building to give someone test answers an "honest manner".

*Funny thing is, the first semester I took her classes I did just that. I couldn't afford the text so I went into the college bookstore a few times each week and read just the first sentence of each paragraph of that week's assignments. She knew I was doing this and I later went on to graduate and become her colleague as program assistant.

I suppose if you know how to tie a running bowline (or at least a simple bowline), know when a D-shaped straight gate carabiner is preferable to an oval carabiner and can tell the difference and know proper usage of an RURP, Knifeblade and Lost Arrow piton. Otherwise, no, this is not advisable.

No, seriously, helping kids by cheating teaches them to cheat and doing so is cheating them. Now if you asked me if I think giving standardized tests is OK I would say, no, I'm not in favor of that. But if it were one of my kids I would tell them, "Look, this test sucks but I'm going to study with you and help you get through it because you are going to run up against this shit all your life so let's get through this and move on to something more creative."

Those parents were not going to get away with this. Look at them! And by pulling that stunt, now the kids have been expelled and have far less of a chance of getting out of what ever shit hole they are caught in. Those parents did their kids a great disservice.

The level of education in India is very high and very difficult. An Indian friend of mine moved back home to India from Ireland with his son. They came back after a year. The son hated it basically because his school was so difficult and pressure filled. He much preferred going to school in Ireland. I think he was 12 at the time. Even at 12 he was taking classes in 3 languages if I remember correctly. I'm not condoning what the parents did but it is a hardcore education system in India.

    not quite.

They desperately want to continue their education so they can make money and not have to live in poverty.

    It's tremendous pressure.

Other parts of the world many don't even try, parents and kids and then you get things like this.

They should be expelled. If you want your child to pass a test, teach them to fucking study. This is stupidity at its finest.

Just to ensure that their kid gets better than a grade 10 education, actually. Nevertheless, if your kid can't pass a grade 10 exam, then they don't have much hope in higher grades or university anyway.
