Montreal Jazz Fest - advice needed

I'm planning a Northeast trip with my family; wife, 6 and 15 year old girl and 13 year old boy. We just so happen to be in the area right at Jazz fest and I'm definitely not missing my chance to see the best in the world. I already booked a room at the Embassy on Saint Antoine Ouest, so we should be just a few blocks from the center.

I really just want to be in the area and see some of the free shows. I doubt we will do many of the pay shows since we want to see the city and will only be there for a few days before we move on to the next spot. I want to experience the atmosphere.

So for those experienced at Jazz Fest, any ideas about what we should do/not do (considering the age of my kids), festivities to definitely be a part of, etc? I know this is a very open question, but we just booked last night so nothing is in or out. We're there July 1-3rd or 4th.

No one here has been to Montreal Jazz Fest and can offer an opinion?

July 1st is Canada's day but it's not a big celebration in Montreal.
For the Jazz fest, since the schedule is unknow, it's hard to say what you should see or not...
