The ideas on 'fat' and its impact on health has changed a lot in the last 20 years but a lot of this seems very misleading. Overeating may make you obese but eating crap in some form of moderation is still going to make you overweight.

Wine is good for you.
See, I've also heard wine is healthy (much like coffee), but always with a caveat.
Everything has a caveat.
LIFE has a caveat.
I've come to radically reduce the stock I place in studies, as well as those who conduct them.
While I might agree that eating whatever you want, in moderation, is ok for weight the author doesn't address concerns about other health issues. For instance, there are emerging studies that suggest that consuming foods derived from GMOs are linked to gluten disorders and even certain forms of cancer. Obesity is a huge concern but it is not the only one.
Are we getting something out of this all-encompassing trip?
Seems my preconceptions are what should have been burned...

For sure, riotgrl. And beyond that... who knows. We have no idea what the long-term affects of eating lab experiment frankenfoods will be. Personally, I have no interest in being one of the guinea pigs.

I suggest if some of you have the time watch the documentary "Forks over Knives" it highlights the 20 year China study that compares eating habits in relation to diseases in geographical regions factoring in westernized fast foods and products vs rural villages with traditional eating habits.Very eye opening stuff.I highly recommend it.
rr, I haven't changed my av since I re-joined awhile back
The doc sounds interesting. I wonder if it's similar to the diets/foods eaten in Greece...heard it's one of the healthiest, in terms of longevity and overall physical well-being.

Ok yeah for sure I'll give it a go...Cheers for that.

I've seen it and it is definitely eye opening. But there have been some studies conducted that refute some of the claims Campbell made in The China Study. Here is an interesting debate between Campbell and Cordain that goes into more detail.
there's too much misinformation out there for anyone to really know what the fuck they are talking about. Butter is bad. Margarine is good. oh wait, margarine is bad now, butter is good for you! well, not good, but not as bad!
eat organic vegetables. that's as far as the medical community knows for sure.

Eat whatever the fuck you want. The key is exercise. You don't have to be a gym rat or a long distance runner. But get up and go for a walk, chase the dog/kids around the yard, etc.

True, if weight is your only consideration. Our overly sugary diets hurt our livers regardless of our size...though it must be noted that most people who exercize eat healthier anyways, it takes dedication to get the dyuhbitus!

Not really true. This applies to those who are a healthy weight because they already have the balance worked out in their diet and lifestyle (and of course thst balance is the goal, and i think the point of this thread). But If you suddenly started eating a ton of crap and increase the portions (aka whatever the fuck you want assuming you actually want crap), you'd get fatter fast. In fact, 70% of it is about diet. 20% about exercise. 10% is just plain old genetics. A person who is fat can't lose weight without dramatically changing their diet even if they exercise hard 4 hours a day. But they can drop weight extremely quickly of they radically change their diet, even if they don't increase their exercise at all. It is almost all about diet.

The whole insulin spike thing.Really those sugars and simple processed carbs are the big culprits.

It's like saying how pure heroin doesn't harm you- that the addiction and lack of eating and everything else that comes with it kills you but not the actual heroin.

That's not true. Exercise is key, but more importantly is moderation and portion control.
I guess it boils down to everyone's body being different & responding differently to certain changes. I haven't changed my diet at all, and I eat like shit. But I started walking 2-3 miles a day back in July and I've lost 25 lbs. I'm sure my blood pressure and cholesterol suck but they always have, even when I was a lot more conscious about my diet. Damn genetics.
it is also not just about weight. lots of people are what is called "inside fat". people who have a ridiculously high metabolism, so they can eat like shit and still maintain a healthy BMI, but they may end up dying of a heart attack early in life anyway because of heart disease or blocked arteries.

There are some interesting theories about environmental triggers and genetic makeup. I'm reading a book about epigenetics that says environmental factors may play a greater role in health than simply looking at genetic profiles.

Eating sugar doesn't cause type 2 diabetes at all. Being overweight can (it's a lot to do with genetics too).

Pj,simple carbs and refined sugars directly effect Insulin resistance,And are a precursor to both Type 2 and Metabolic syndrome(Which technically is also An Insulin resistance issue).Sure genetics play a big roll but sugars/Simple carbs/processed foods are bad little fuckers for the body.Eating too much of both make you fat.Being fat can kill you.
On a somewhat related note, apparently this author/blogger scammed a whole bunch of people by claiming she had cured her brain tumour with "natural therapies" and whole foods. Turns out she never had cancer. Mysteriously, the proceeds from her book that were supposed to be donated to charity somehow never got there.

Gotta love this quote!
I tend to go with the common sense factor of moderation, mixed with the once (or thrice)-in-awhile indulgence.
Everything has a caveat.
