I can see why the name would offend you. Since someone came up with the name because the ingredients are Irish and the effects are "explosive," I'm sure they thought it was perfectly witty. We seem to go for that kind of humor in this country.

The idea of naming a drink after a car bomb, Irish or from any conflict, doesn't appeal to me but I'm not a wise-ass bartender who faces a room full of drunks every night. I doubt most people think of the origins for the names of most drinks, such as Bloody Mary being a historical character. I'm sure it was a shock to see it from your perspective.

I think the name is inappropriate when you think of the horrific events that occurred during the troubles and the number of deaths as a result of car bombs on both sides. I do understand though that Americans wouldn't necessarily get that as most would have only a passing knowledge of the conflict

I think plenty of Americans have a pretty good understanding of the troubles. I just think that it wouldn't occur to many to get offended by names of alcoholic beverages. They probably wouldn't be offended by a drink's name. At least I think it has to get a lot more offensive than that. There IS a popular drink called the kamikaze, and no one minds. I doubt even the grandkids of men who died from a kamikaze bombing cares. I mean, an Irish car bomb.... it's really just a historical reference. They did exist. We all know it. And they fucked people up. So does booze, in a different way. And it's a bomb drink... i dunno, seems pretty on the nose.

An Irish guy who is very well know here in Philly an is really big in the community owns a pretty awesome bar and won't serve them because of the name.

I have had many, never even occurred to me that it could be offensive until a couple years ago

I can see that. I honestly never even thought of the name being offensive until this thread. I will also double down on my assessment of the drink and say it tastes like shit.
  • All I taste is chocolate milk. Considering it's been around since at least the early 80's don't think this one should be getting blamed on the hipsters.

I wasn't saying that hipsters made up the name for the car bomb. I was simply implying that there has been a history of crude/offensive drink names.
I only remember a few, but there are some new ones (that I don't remember being around years ago), which more than likely, a hipster created/named it. I.e. 'date grape kool-aid' and 'pink pu§§+'

The most offensive thing about it is what happens to the pint glass. The coagulation that ensues after the Guinness, whiskey and Baileys are mixed together is downright putrid. As a former bartender we used to despise them just because of the cleaning that was needed. That semi-liquid remnant that is left behind in the glass resembles a gelatinous stool.

To the OP...It was Bill Clinton who negotiated the ceasefire and subsequent peace talks so I'm pretty sure Americans have a good understanding of the troubles.

Yes the Americans did help in the peace talks but I think it's fair to say that doesn't give Americans an idea of what it's like to live in a country where such a conflict has taken so many lives, nor an understanding of the hundreds of years of history that led to it

To me (about 50% Irish, but classify myself as Irish heritage as my name/dad's side are very Irish) as an American, I always considered the drink to be just a completely definition as the literal act that used to take place by the IRA.

We also had an Irish mobster that used to use that as a weapon all the time (in Cleveland or Columbus I believe?) Hell, we had Timothy McVeigh use this tool in the OKC Bombing. Car bombs are a classic terroristic/guerrilla tool used all over the world.

As mentioned, the drink is what it is. The contents are all Irish ingredients... and I believe a drink where you drop a shot into a drink is called a "Bomb Shot". Naturally, an "Irish Car Bomb" is the perfect name. I am sure nearly 0% of people who drink them mean any disrespect toward victims in Ireland, and also, I would bet in modern days, very few 18-25 year olds have any clue what the IRA even is/was.

I have a friend that can drink one in about 1.3 seconds. Not to make light of the initial post, but it's a pretty amazing sight to see. He was actually going to try for the GBoWR but they stopped doing world records for alcohol consumption (for obvious reasons).
