    One of the all-time best!

I used to dub 'Private Pyle and Sarge' interactions on my mixed tapes:

Just one of the countless great exchanges.

I probably should have added in the description that I used this scene because of the sniper. The sniper is the most lethal enemy they face yet you pity her in the end.

It's really well made and acted but I am not a fan. It's basically two movies smashed into one sitting. I understand why, and for a soldier it makes sense, but as a viewer I don't want to get emotionally invested in characters only to have to most of them disappear and be replaced by new characters to which I have no investment.

Gambs, then what is your take on Apocalypse Now?

Do you really want a movie to be so linear?I would rather have my characters move a bit and keep the freshness and nuances around every scene.A more layered, complex way to tell the story.i think that made sense.

I haven't seen Apocalypse Now, I'm not big into war movies at all. All the brotherly bonding in the midst of graphic violence serves to turn me off. Boys clubs are a big dislike of mine. I like martial arts movies and sci-fi, historic and epics, so it's not a violence thing, just a distaste for modern war movies. I understand what you mean about non-linear, and it did make sense, that is a realistic experience for those involved. I just didn't feel like it carried well across the gap. I felt entirely disinterested when basic was over and I am expected to get acquainted with all new characters who hadn't had the Pyle experience. What is the point of such an important and traumatic event if there is very little development of the impact it has on the other characters involved?

I concure RR. I tried to fit in Cambodia on my trip because of all the killer scenes in that Movie. The anchient ruins there are supposed to take days to explore. All the backpackers say it's the tits, but get your shots cause Cambodia has every disease imaginable. Let me tell you guys something, Vietnam is absolutely awesome. People are so kind and its a travellers dream with everything imaginable thing to do...plus you will never feel more rich in your life when you are here...the waves have been tastey too...

Most fucked up line in FMJ.... Joker: "how do you kill woman and Children"
Helicopter gunner: " you just don't lead them as much". BAM!!!!

Yeah, I have no desire to step inside that sort of mentality. A joke like that from a comedian is one thing, a joke like that from someone who kills women and children is just sick.

I second that motion, Apocalypse Now is my favourite film (as opposed to movie, fave movie is The Empire Strikes Back, lol) of all time, the war is just the setting, not the story. If I can I'll join in the "watch any movie" suggestion as well, lol.

I will have to track down a copy! Is it less of a macho romp than FMJ?

Absolutely (less macho, though there are some macho characters), just in case you're unaware, it's a retelling of Joseph Conrad's Heart Of Darkness. If you've never seen Apocalypse I'd recommend starting with Apocalypse Now, and if you dig it, then maybe try Apocalypse Now Redux (has added scenes, but the flow changes somewhat).
