Ed's singing technique

Just listening to the new Vault vinyl and thinking about Eddie's singing.

Ed knows how to use his body to resonate a note. Sometimes it's nasal, sometimes from his chest, up in his head, etc... He doesn't just rip from the throat or just amplify his speaking voice. He let's the notes ring through his body, or warps them in his throat when at his best. This is real singing. This is why he can sing with Pakistani singers or whoever and still communicate. This is what great singers like Ella Fitzgerald could do, opera singers.... legit!

I'm a singer myself and can't hold a damn candle to Ed, never will. He is a great teacher but most people just don't have what he has. It's a gift.

You speak the truth OP. When I see PJ live I think I'm just going to tear Ed a new one with my singing along passionately and then after 20 minutes I'm hacking up a lung. I appreciate him even more then.

You mean figuratively right? You aren't one of those people behind us that we wish would be quiet? Breathe for example?

OP you nailed it, EV singing technique is real. It can not and should not be attempted by anyone at a concert during passionate parts in their songs.

There is nothing worse than having a guy/girl singing Breathe (insert other song here) right behind you. Betterman intro is an accepted song for everyone to sing along, others no.

You are at a Pearl Jam concert people not in your shower. You can't sing so be quiet and listen.

Hell yes! I've never been a really good singer but i try. I'm 37 and I smoke and drink and I simply can't do what I could a decade ago. It's great that Eddie can even come close. I hope he has throat doctors and vocal coaches. He should, that's for sure.

One of my favorite moments of this band live was hearing the collective voice of thousands, at my first show. Rearviewmirror. It was powerful, almost draining.

And if anyone's ever heard the "once divided" line from Milan's Nothingman in 2000, they might be inclined to agree.

Anyway, as to Ed, his voice is on a par with the music.

I agree, and I don't love BS. Of course his voice is aging, and not always gracefully, but he'll pull through.

I'd say it was after 2006.

    Breathe?

Yes the song. It is very, very annoying when you have someone directly behind you singing every single word to the song. Loud, can't sing ruins the moment. There are plenty of songs where singing is acceptable - Alive, RVM, EW, EF, BM

Certain songs don't make the cut though - If you find you are one of the few that is singing out loud perhaps there is a reason for that.

Petty complaint from me? No, I just don't want to go to a concert and have it sung to me by a shitty singer.

I think he's questioning your use of the song title "Breathe" as there is no such Pearl Jam song. You mean Breath or Just Breathe. I would argue that singing Breath with Ed at shows is pretty damn fun. I don't sing along to Just Breathe because I don't usually sing while I'm urinating.

I think this thread may have taken a wrong turn somewhere. ;)) Regardless the OP is absolutely correct and yes Eddie has one of the best voices ever!

Ed's singing technique is actually pretty simple - he just opens his mouth and magic comes out.
