Sleater-Kinney - No Cities to Love (1/20)

No idea how there isn't a thread for this album. A fantastic comeback and probably one of the best Rock records in years.

I need help with Sleater Kinney, this whole album sounds bland to me. I just don't get it. What am I missing?

Not sure. It's phenomenal. I'm not getting how you can hear bland. Maybe you just can't get into them. NBD.

Still isn't a better rock album this year. Actually, just one of the best overall albums this year.

I wish the digital version wasn't so compressed.

are you implying that there is a vinyl version that has it's own master? (i thought that was a thing of the past?)

If I opened it now would you not understand?

Seems like it, according to the dynamic range database (higher DR is better):
    Vinyl Rip

    Pono Store download:

    Unknown download:

There is no reason that they can't make digital have the same dynamic range as vinyl, but they choose to compress the hell out of it for digital. It seems to be industry practice, in fact. Spoon's album that came out last year is another example. Weezer's latest album has a different master with a better DR for the Hi-Res versions (HDTracks, Pono) than the CD version. Beck's Morning Phase had some crazy stuff going on in terms of different digital versions:

Is there a way to convert a Pono file to mp3?

Other than ripping the vinyl, that seems like a good option to get a less compressed version.

Excellent! Hope it's recorded well, most live albums in my opinion don't live up to the sound of the studio versions, but here's hoping!

It's ok, in my opinion nothing can live up to the sound of the studio version. However, it's difficult to compare a live show to a studio album, and in my opinion, if a band can only play a song the same way they played it in the studio, they aren't that good.
