Bummer!

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-30654731

"Bono broke his arm in six places and fractured his eye socket, hand and shoulder blade in what he called a "freak accident" in New York.

In the letter to his fans, he said he was unable to move around physically and would have to "concentrate hard" to be fit for U2's next tour.

At the time, the hospital where Bono was being treated said he had been involved in "a high-energy bicycle accident when he attempted to avoid another rider".

The Irish rocker spoke this week about being on painkillers for weeks and said he had a "massive injury, I can't blame on anyone but myself".

The 54-year-old Dubliner revealed he now had a titanium elbow."

this is bad......but I truly didn't know that Bono ever played the guitar.

I think he's more like Springsteen in that he wears the guitar.

It's been a long time since I've been a U2 fan but his guitar playing isn't a major part of their music, is it? This won't capsize the band, as it would if he lost his voice. Not to minimize the personal frustration he feels about not being able to play.

On a related note, I've always kind of thought Bono was a pretentious prat, but I read the "A to Z" blog he wrote about his year and it was quite charming and funny. It makes me wonder if either (a) I have unfairly maligned him, or (b) someone else wrote it on his behalf!

    Accessory item for rock star.

He's not exactly noted for guitar playing.

Yeah, Bono is pretty much your basic strumming rhythm guitar player but the Green Gretsch Falcon sure makes him look good!

Interesting comment, imalvie. I remember reading somewhere that Merle Haggard found it a bit distasteful when some musicians basically just "wear" a guitar. I'll have to dig up that article. I think it was in an old High Times issue.

I stole it from a Rich and Chris Robinson interview....they were saying that not too many current musicians learn to really play...Rich certainly does a lot more than wear a guitar....I love that guy!

Well, Bono is probably no more than just a basic guitar player, but he does play a bit on it. And he likely uses it a bit more when composing, when he and the band are jamming for song ideas.

As for Springsteen, I completely disagree with you that he just wears the guitar. It's the main instrument he uses for composing. And despite the many (up to 4!) additional guitar players in the E Street Band, I consider him the main guitar player. Certainly before Nils Lofgren joined, but even then he still plays the main solos, etc.
It's been a long time since I've been a U2 fan but his guitar playing isn't a major part of their music, is it? This won't capsize the band, as it would if he lost his voice. Not to minimize the personal frustration he feels about not being able to play.

No, he isn't the main guitar player, though his contributions (like on One, The Fly, Staring At The Sun or Walk On) did add to the songs. But, as he wrote in the post on U2.com ( http://www.u2.com/news/title/little-book-of-a-big-year ) from which this headline is taken "The band have reminded me that neither they nor Western civilization are depending on this." :)

I've been following the band for quite a few years and have read plenty of them and about them. In my view observation (a) is correct. Yes, he can be a bit pretentious at times (but then again, which rock star isn't), but he's certainly charming and funny quite often. Though at times his jokes fly over the heads of many when those people take him serious.

Yeah, i actually had no idea that he ever played the guitar, so I'm not feeling any loss here... But if Bono loves playing and maybe can't do it anymore, then I empathize with him. Of course, it could just be that he was having a bad day mentally, which tends to happen to people who are dealing with injuries and can't do anything. It may have just been a depressed comment, and he will in fact be able to play his guitar again (at home??... does he really play on stage? I'll have to rewatch some stuff apparently, lol).

  • Yes, he does play on stage. A bit.
Here's an example (and take note he's playing the rhythm guitar. All cool guitar bits are courtesy of The Edge :) ).

But for the moment that might be quite far away, as apparently his elbow looks (looked?) like this:

^^^That's a lotta hardware in that arm. And then on top of that he suffered other serious injuries:

    http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/bono-intensive-therapy-bike-injury-20141119

The singer suffered numerous serious injuries, including a "facial fracture involving the orbit of his eye," three separate fractures of his left shoulder blade and a fracture of his left humerus bone in his upper arm. The latter injury was particularly damaging, with the bone shattering in six different places and tearing through his skin.

    No fun!

I had surgery last July and 7 titanium screws, 2 plates to hold them all together in my ankle and it looks nothing like that. Bono injury all from a bicycle accident which to me is hard to believe. It's taken 4-5 months plus therapy for me to return to 80%, now I'm at the half way point of a year to return to 100%. I can just, no I can't imagine how long it will take for him to return to some sort of normalcy.

I wish him well and hope to see them on tour later this year and don't hurry back too soon...take care of you FIRST is what I was told.

    Peace
