ANOTHER cop shooting close to ferguson

http://m.huffpost.com/us/entry/6376210

Here we go AGAIN.

A Missouri teen was fatally shot by an officer on Tuesday night just two miles from Ferguson, Mo., police said.

Antonio Martin, 18, was shot at a Mobil gas station in Berkeley, Mo., the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. The alleged victim's mother, Toni Martin, spoke to The Dispatch and confirmed that her son had been shot by police.

It was originally reported that the shooting occurred early Wednesday. However, according to The Associated Press, the incident actually took place late Tuesday:

County police spokesman Sgt. Brian Schellman says a Berkeley police officer was conducting a routine business check at a gas station around 11:15 p.m. Tuesday when he saw two men and approached them.
Schellman says one of the men pulled a handgun and pointed it at the officer. The officer fired several shots, striking and fatally wounding the man. Schellman says that the second person fled and that the deceased man's handgun has been recovered.

The Berkeley Police Department requested that St. Louis County Police Department's Crimes Against Persons Unit handle the investigation, The St. Louis County Police Department noted on its Facebook page.

"At this time, we cannot confirm the identity of the deceased subject. The investigation is on-going and further details will be provided as the investigation proceeds," the Facebook notice said.

The hashtag #AntonioMartin is trending on social media. Those at the scene, along with The Dispatch, report approximately 60 to 100 people gathered around the gas station where the shooting took place.

Livestreams at the scene show residents verbally clashing with police. A woman identified as Martin's mother could be heard sobbing "That's my baby!" on the feed.

The gas station appears to have security cameras trained on the parking lot, the Dispatch reported, so there may be a video of the incident.

This is a developing story. Story has been updated with a time change, police statement and a clarification about the witness.

It's that they DIDNT call an ambulance and left him to die on the street. That's what I read in a couple articles that the reports are starting to come out.

Edit-I did some reading on twitter and some news feeds to see what's going on. This article isn't really stating anything cuz it was a developing story at the time.

^^^ exactly. So until we get more and accurate reporting lets wait to pass judgement. Sound like a plan?

Nice. A good tactic encouraged here.

It seems we have all learned something through the exercises of the past.

No matter what we hear as info comes in, you know this is going to be more trouble. This shit is going to snowball across the country until we do something about better training and higher standards for police officers. And I say this assuming you all know by now I don't think all cops are bad and believe some are excellent. But overall, the system needs sweeping changes.

Don't shoot the messenger, I just posted the article. I wrote "another" because like brian said, no matter what, shits gonna hit the fan. It's adding fuel to fire.

  • If the dude was dead, there would be no need to call an ambulance. Not knowing the specifics of the case, I'll refrain from judgement. But just based on that article alone, it doesn't appear that the cop did anything wrong or illegal.
  • I just saw the video of this shooting and from what I saw, the kid did point a gun at the cop. The officer was clearly defending himself. Nothing about this case resembles the ferguson shooting except an 18 yr old black was shot and killed by a white cop. There won't even be a grand jury called here. I'm not sure why people are wanting to protest this.

Kid made bad choices and police officer again called out to take action on bad situation. Officer should be thanked for putting life in extreme danger. And we should examine why young man ended up in this situation and see if we can do things to alter course for future young humans

But alas we'll just retreat into our packs and get in line.

  • The mayor of Berkeley said on CNN that the cop was responding to a call of shoplifting at the gas station. They did not say if the 2 guys that confronted the cop were involved in the shoplifting. Did anyone hear if they were?

From the articles I've been reading, the issue was that the cops didn't call an ambulance for 30 mins but instead called for crowd control and dogs. If the kid pointed a gun, blast him away. But remember, we're talking about the Missouri police here, not real credible. Know what I mean.

Let's not look for reasons to bash the cops. Like I said, if the kid was dead already (I don't know if he was killed instantly), there is no reason to call for an ambulance.
  • Given how things have gone, I think it was a really wise move to call for crowd control- for both the police and crowd's safety.

I'm not bashing all cops just those cops in Missouri. I have real good friends who are cops, detectives, sheriffs and prosecutors cops/federal agents. I can tell the difference from good/bad and right/wrong. Just want some calmness around the world.
  • By the way, in that link that indifference posted... did anybody else see the video footage of Michael Brown roughing up the store clerk? This was the most complete depiction of the events in the store that day and it most certainly speaks to the fact that Brown was as brazen as people have suggested.

He (brown) 100% looked like an asshole in that video. And he (brown's step-father) was a complete 100% asshole for yelling "burn it down! Burn it down!" Fucked up shit
  • Surveillance video shows the kid pulling out a gun. Cop defends self. Case closed...

I ask "why" would you pull out a gun on a cop? "why" ? That is just stupid. The person could have been pink and orange and he would have been shot.

    I don't understand people.

    which he later apologized for.

  • I haven't heard to much more about this. I guess when there's no doubt the cop was justified, it doesn't make much of a news story.
  • Did anyone read any of the comments under the original story posted in the link? The majority of the initial comments were trying to discredit the video and presenting alternative theories to what seems to have now been accepted.

People were suggesting the guy was simply pointing at the cop, while others were suggesting the gun was a nondescript item.

The level of distrust or paranoia is truly disconcerting. Its becoming- if it hasn't already- lose-lose for cops.

I wonder if that mindset will have any bearing if/when body cameras become the norm.

Didn't read the comments but if the guy indeed only pointed at the cop...why would he or any rational person do that? I can't profess to know the mindset of anyone there, but if I'm instructed to do something by an officer in that kind of situation, I'm doing it. Definitely not pointing at those giving me the directions.

It's almost like willfull blindness, deafness.

Perhaps he assumed the cop would think it was a toy gun and therefore just taze him.
