This holiday seaon, consider shopping locally at independents.

Those of you who know me know I'm not big into consumerism but let's face it, most everyone here is going to buy at least some gifts this month. The article in the link below offers some good reasons to consider shopping locally (yeah, I know, she said "local"... the demise of proper English). A few of those points include:

"...small businesses help shape and create the community in which they reside..."

"...consider the value that small, local businesses bring to your local employment options. Independent businesses help increase employment rates, as well become the customers to local accountants, lawyers, printers, marketing agencies and more. The domino effect is simply too good to ignore..."

I know some of you will believe I'm only posting this due to my involvement in local, small, independent business but I've always felt this way. My parents were into local business and co-ops as far back as the 50's. It's all about community.

Thanks for considering shopping..., locally!

Always try and use brick n mortar over internet. Same with food, avoid chains like the plague.

I try to buy local, mom and pop shops etc when practical.
With a family it is hard to avoid chain grocery stores I must say. But you can find some great gifts from local shops which I'm sure everyone already knows. OP good reminder to us.

  • I have virtually stopped getting gas a BP gas stations. I wonder if the couple hundred bucks a year I would have spent there really matters to a multi billion dollar company.

I think we have to believe that every thoughtful action has an impact in some way, and that every lost customer is a blow, even if small, to companies who don't behave responsibly.

Absolutely with you on your first thought...I hope so on the second.

Save for what we give our building's staff, we don't do holiday gifts (but we're not grinches!).

If we did, would definitely take the independent route.

I guess we have to believe it's doing some harm to their bottom line, otherwise, why do it? I know a lot of those gas stations are independently owned and operated, but the oil spill really turned me off to the company. Anyone that knows me knows I'm not an environmental guy (see Brian for that, lol) so for me to make that decision was somewhat of a difference in my way of thinking.

I was only about 8 or 9 when the Exxon Valdez oil spill happened. I didn't fully understand that impact. I just remember my elementary school taking donations of dawn dish detergent. I think our school donated 4 or 5 cases of the stuff.
