Wtf, 250,000 animals to be slaughtered in the name of Hindu religion

There are weird ones from all religions. Here's a particularly ridiculous one from Judaism!

    http://judaism.about.com/od/holidays/a/Kaparot-Kaparos-Yom-Kippur-Custom.htm

Kaparot can be performed anytime between Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur, but most often takes place the day before Yom Kippur. Men use a rooster, while women use a hen.

The ritual begins by reciting the following biblical verses:

Some lived in deepest darkness, bound in cruel irons... (Psalms 107:10)
He brought them out of deepest darkness, broke their bonds asunder... (Psalms 107:14).
There were fools who suffered for their sinful way, and for their iniquities. All food was loathsome to them: They reached the gates of death. In their adversity they cried to the Lord and He saved them from their troubles. He gave an order and healed them; He delivered them from the pits. Let them praise the Lord for His steadfast love, His wondrous deeds for mankind (Psalms 107:17‑21).
Then He has mercy on him and decreed, "Redeem him from descending to the Pit, For I have obtained his ransom" (Job 33:24).
Then the rooster or hen is whirled above the individual's head three times while the following words are recited: "This is my substitute, my vicarious offering, my atonement. The cock or hen shall meet death, but I shall enjoy a long, pleasant life of peace." (Koltach, Alfred. pg. 239.) After these words are said the chicken is slaughtered and either eaten by the person who performed the ritual or given to the poor.

Because kaparot is a controversial custom, in modern times, Jews who practice kaparot will often substitute money wrapped in white cloth for the chicken. The same biblical verses are recited, and then the money is swung about the head three times as with the chicken. At the conclusion of the ceremony the money is given to charity.

I live around the corner from an Orthodox Jewish high school, and what seems like the entire community gathers to do this. Trucks full of chickens are delivered, and the swinging commences. I haven't seen it personally, but my mom watched it this year and was pretty flabbergasted and disgusted.

I seem to keep thinking about this and seeing those horrid images in my head as I prepare to go to work and face the throngs of mad/happy Black Friday shoppers (not sure what if any connection to this subject that is... except maybe madness, LOL)- and it seems to me no matter what is said about this kind of brutal act being connected to religion, it has to go beyond religion to something deeper, more insane, more cruel, more 250,000 times fucked up- something deeply hideous and evil the the psyche of certain monsters-as-humans. How do people get this fucked up?

Ugh- OK happy shoppers, ready or not, hear I come!

Just add this to the numerous fucked up things about organized religion.
  • And what do WE we waste in the name of religion? Countless numbers of individual souls......until they wake up

Not sure what you mean, vickisomoya. Several questions come to mind:

    Who are "WE"?
What is the religion of this "WE"?
What does the religion of "WE" do to waste souls?
In what way are those souls wasted?
Until "they" wake up- what the "WE" or the "souls" wake up?

Sorry for so many questions- I'm just not following what you mean here.

The irony here is that almost all Hindus are vegetarians. I wasn't sure why this is really, so just read this on Wikipedia:

"Paths of Hinduism hold vegetarianism as an ideal. There are three main reasons for this: the principle of nonviolence (ahimsa) applied to animals,[15] the intention to offer only "pure" (vegetarian) food to a deity and then to receive it back as prasad,[16] and the conviction that non-vegetarian food is detrimental for the mind and for spiritual development. Many Hindus point to scriptural bases, such as the Mahabharata's maxim that "Nonviolence is the highest duty and the highest teaching,"[17] as advocating a vegetarian diet."

Way to go with the nonviolence there, Hindus. :-??

I'm with Nart. Prejudice is judging without valid cause, but that's not what he was doing. Judging without prejudice is something that's almost expected: it's how we choose our friends, how we form our families, how we decide what causes are worth condemning and which are worth praising. Frankly, taking life from 250,000 animals without the intention of consuming 250,000 animals out of pure necessity is just plain wrong to me. What a waste of life.

    Thanks Ben, appreciate it.

I do find it odd that someone would comment about my statement and not the act itself. Weird.

This wasn't some altruistic action - it was done to appease a god and bring the slaughterers prosperity.

Fuck animal rights? Remember we're animals too.

I'd be careful if I were you. In your afterlife, do you want a bucket of boiling water dumped on your head while you wear a coat of fire?

Yeah. Didn't think so. Say your prayers.

I ate clam chowder the last two days in a row after the wife made a big pot. Man I ate some ugly clams- the kind that made my face distort as I felt them being mashed by my teeth.

You won't find me in opposition to the notion of a 'real' pearly gate. No knock-off shitty pearly gate, but the real McCoy for sure! Screw clams.
