Need advice on a higher end record player

JB128716JB128716 Posts: 2,064
Hi all.

I've owned a decent $200 record player for years now.

I've been debating if a higher end record player will really make a difference. I'm currently looking at the Rega RP3.

Any advice?

  • Call Jon at musicdirect.com.
    Tell him Sam sent ya.
  • If you're happy with your current player and have extra cash,I would do a speaker upgrade first.

Got nice speakers and receiver. Those were first.

Record player is starting to go so it's time for a new one.

how much money you looking to spend, that is the biggest factor. Depending on what you buy you may need a better needle, platter, cables etc. Do you have a phono- pre-amp?

The Rega RP3 with cartridge and power supply is 1500 and the Rega RP6 that comes with the power supply and needle is 2000.

I'd like to stay in that price range.

I saw the site for the first time and it does look like I'll be shopping there. Good prices and the added feature of no interest financing is nice.

Rega RP3 is what I use and yes you should hear a big difference. I would up grade the cartridge forget the power pack its not necessary.

My first recommendation is to find a stereo shop near you that you could go to and see/hear and talk about it.

I was reading that you need this power pack thing to easily go from 33 1/3 to 45. Is sounded like if you don't have that, it's a pain in the ass to switch speeds. Is that not the case?

I would think that if you were spending 1000 on a turntable, you should be able to switch speeds. LOL

I was also thinking about using my other turntable just to play 45's since I don't play them that often.

Rp3 is a great player... But if you want to upgrade it your upgrading it to basically make it a rp-6, for a about the same money you can buy the rp-6 (minus a cartridge) buy a lower cost needle for now and u will have an amazing setup....I know this cause I researched it and ended up getting a rp-6 for the reason stated above, and I'm so glad I got the rp-6.... With the rp-6 you can put some great cartridges on it.... I'm very sold on rega products, they know analog!!!!!

Believe it or not, this is the low-end of the high-end market. I've seen some that cost more that 10k.
