I'll be honest, I haven't heard King Animal or Oceania. Only heard a little of STP and I really liked what I heard, but that's not really enough to go on.

Smashing Pumpkins hasn't been The Smashing Pumpkins in years....F Billy for continuing on under the name with just himself and an ever changing group of band mates.

The only album I haven't heard (or seen on the tour promoting the album) was the STP one. I should tread carefully here but I think King Animal is a slightly better album than Lightning Bolt. Oceania has a few cool songs but overall didn't do much for me.

Edit: I have listened to the SONGS of LB quite a bit in the various 2013-2014 bootlegs. I tend to enjoyed them more interspersed with the classic tunes.

Lightning Bolt is a far superior record to the others listed imo. I enjoy King Animal but not nearly as strong as LB. That Pumpkins record is just terrible. Again just my opinion but they haven't put out anything listenable since Mellon Collie. Haven't listened to STP in many years so I don't know about that one.

LB wins for me, but King Animal is a close second. That album kicks serious ass and is a really special one for me, personally, as someone who never thought they'd ever get new SG material, let alone see them live! I remember streaming King Animal for the first time during an internship I had...barely got any work done that day!

But LB is truly an amazing PJ album. Songs that are classic PJ but still look ahead to the future. Great songwriting, unique instrumentals, songs translate awesome live...gotta love it!

I agree. I like Lightning Bolt and have listened to it many times. For me, I like King Animal because the songs seem a little more cohesive as an album. I also just tend to like albums that have more of that rock sound.

King Animal is actually one of SG's best albums overall. Pretty dang impressive for guys that didnt work together for 15 years.

Pretty much what I was thinking. Just can't get into the latter pumpkins stuff, and STP with Chester Bennington, just can't get into it.

I really liked the Smashing Pumpkins album, and voted for it as I figured most would pick lightning bolt.

Gonna go with BECK & the new album "Morning Phase"
    BEST album by a MILE!!
And the BAND he's put together is killer too,
Saw shows in Columbus & Detroit this year & they were just INCREDIBLE!!!
Not a 90's band, but Band of Horses - Acoustic At The Ryman is GREAT too & I can't wait to hear the new My Morning Jacket album when it is released next year!!

Does 1994 count as "early nineties"? Foo Fighters' Wasting Light (2011) completely stunned me. Incredible from start to finish, I listened to it in a loop for a few weeks straight!

Wasting Light gets my vote as well. In fact, it might just be my favorite FF album.

    My Bloody Valentine - MBV
    Beck - Morning Phase

so happy I am not the only one to make this comment.

Wasting light is by far the best offering from any of these bands... such an amazing album.

has anyone else started Sonic Highways? I signed up for a free trial of HBO just so I could watch it... watched the first 2 episodes in the last 2 days, gonna watch the third tonight... Dave is doing an amazing job hyping this album, and with just cause, it's quite a feat he accomplished laying down a track in 8 different cities/studios across america and only alloting a week for each track...

I know we're now past the mid-point of the 90's but ...Like Clockwork tops all of them by a mile.

And I really enjoyed TKOL by radiohead.... maybe not as much as LB, but certainly more than the most recent STP and SP albums...

Houston, Texas... Believe it or not, there are 7 million people here... must be a couple of fans who'd love to see you play.

I would of gone with Foo Fighters - Wasting Light. I really enjoyed that album. They didn't put out their first album until '95 though. Otherwise it would be PJ. Soundgarden's was decent but I'll give the edge to PJ.

The last STP album I really enjoyed was No. 4. The last two albums fizzled. Oceania was ok, but I don't seem to listen to it very often (allthough I did buy adore on vinyl yesterday).

Went with Lightning Bolt. But the self titled from STP was very good. It's too bad Scott is out of the group again.

This was my other pick, but I don't think QOTSA was around until 1996. These two albums made me pay attention to new albums again.

    1990-1994: early '90s.
    1995-1999: late '90s.

Of the 4 albums listed in the OP, 'Lightning Bolt' is by far my favourite. However 'Do To The Beast' and 'Defend Yourself' are fantastic (and better) albums so I would have to go for these. We had to wait a loooong time for these 2 records and they did not disappoint in any way.

according to wikipedia, QOSTA was 1996... I read that before I made the post, but they just seem to fit in with the group of bands we're talking about...

alright then.. since no one likes my answers...

I've determined what the correct answer to the question is that keeps within the original parameters, 10,000 days. (technically speaking it is there most recent release...)
