Lucky enough to have gotten tickets to see the "Body of War" premiere last night at the Toronto Film Festival...first off want to say that it is an important film that people should seek out.

My wife and I ended up getting to the theatre around 6:00pm to get in line for a prime seat (still not believing Ed was actually going to perform)...we were about 6th in line and were not surprised to see plenty of jammers already hanging out (with many more in the "rush" line hoping to score unclaimed tickets)...we found out that Ed had already come out to say hello after sound checking at 5:00 and were bummed we missed him (but pretty hyped up that he had soundchecked). We had a great time in line with fellow jammers talking about shows and experiences (shout out to Beddie Vedder aka Jenn) until it started to POUR at about 8:00. Film festival staff didn't seem to care much and we got soaked for about 35 mins before they let us into the theatre.

We rushed into to score our front row seats (an interesting vantage point from which to watch the documentary) - after the movie there was a short Q&A and introduction of Tomas Young and his family from Phil Donahue (which received a standing ovation)...Ed was introduced shortly thereafter and ended up performing his mini-set about 4 feet from us...his voice sounded amazing, he encouraged the crowd to join him singing the chorus of "No More".

Considering a lot of the first 6 rows were comprised of PJ fans, everyone was pretty well behaved - just an unbelievably intimate place to be able to hear Ed perform and a very special night for everyone that was there - I even was lucky enough to grab his hand written lyrics/notes taped to his amp! There was a pretty neat looking pic left on his chair, but sad to report the grip pocketed it before I could sneak onto the stage and grab it (I had a shot but didn't want to leap onto stage as the director was taking his final bow)...anyway, probably as close to meeting Ed as I'll ever get and a beautiful memory. Thanks for reading.

great review, but still, what was exactly Ed's mini-set?

    only No More War?

You were pretty daring there ... I saw you grab that "setlist" about 2 seconds after Ed got up from his chair. :)

actually...he might have still been sitting when I made my move :)

Did he just play "here's to the state" and "no more"?

Do you have pics of the notes?

That was all we got - I was expecting his other original song from the movie as well, but we didn't get it. Hoped for more (Gimme Some Truth or Masters of War would have fit the bill nice), but considering I refused to believe he'd play anything, I was thrilled

Here is a low res pic of the stage lyrics...

  • Thanks for the shout out! The entire night was great (minus the rain). His performance was great. He was smiling laughing and was in a great mood.

My favorite part of his banter was when he said that he wanted to get all of the pictures out of the way before he started so he started posing like he was singing while everyone snapped away and once he started the song all of the flashed stop (except for one or two I guess). His posing was hilarious!

Getting my christmas record signed and getting to talk to Eddie was amazing but what also made the night great was getting to see a great movie about a hero, seeing Eddie play and getting to meet and share stories with fellow PJ fans!

    Later,
    Beddie Vedder (a.k.a. Jenn)
