Has anyone ever read the Apple itunes policies document? I sure haven't, but I click "agree" every time. It'd be funny if someone takes Apple to court and Apple provides the following:

Lol. Well it's awesome if they make it available for free. I don't have an iphone but downloaded it from itunes (and did not like the album, lol). But I don't see why they had to just stick in on everyone's cloud, and therefore everyone's phone if they didn't have the settings just right, and in a way that then required a special app to remove it.
Special app or wait until 10/18 or whenever....c'mon Soul it's not like they dropped it on your cloud and took $18.99 from your bank account until release day (or did they :-SS)
I don't even have iphone. But I am against this kind of direct viral marketing in principle. No sir, I don't like it at all! Slippery slope!

People love to complain about anything and everything. Bono should have have told everyone that didn't like the free music to go F themselves. People just making noise so "THEY" can be heard. Congrats everyone.
This!
By the way, I really like the new albbum. Great collection without one bad song on it.

Lol. That's something I guess I have to live with.
It's not about any conspiracy theory or anything like that. I just have strong beliefs when it comes to corporate behaviour. Every little detail counts! I say NO to Apple placing anything in our clouds without express permission. That U2 was involved just makes it all the more interesting.

Well whatever. That's not got anything to do with anything as far as my thoughts on the matter go. Complaining for the sake of complaining?? I don't do that. I'm not talking about it to make noise. I'm talking about it because I find this kind of marketing tactic a valid point of discussion and something that people should actually think about and consider the long term ramifications of the kind of thinking that drove Apple and U2 to do this in the first place. That's fine if someone just doesn't give a shit, but at least respect that fact that some people have a different way of thinking when it comes to these things. I have an interest in this general subject.

Yeah, possible. I haven't researched that.... but you'd think that would have been obvious in the news about it if it were the case.... I'd be surprised if that info hadn't been mentioned all over the place if true. I haven't heard a whisper of it, have you? But still, possible.... and if that is the case, then the question of whether or not businesses (i.e. U2) ought to be using such tactics.

With all due respect, I'm a bit confused about this notion that U2/Apple have 'spammed' user accounts, or the deceptiveness of these business tactics, and I think it has to do with a lack of understanding of the cloud-based Apple ecosystem. When a song is purchased on iTunes, there are two 'states':
a) Purchased, not downloaded: just like it sounds, Apple has record that you have the right to download an item an infinite amount of times, onto an infinite amount of devices. This takes no storage space (since it is not downloaded), and your only indication of ownership is the item's presence on an index of purchased songs. Since Apple does no data mining (i.e. collecting demographics of tracks purchased), you are not added personally to any trend. In fact, you will only be added to the 'number of times downloaded' if you actually physically download the files.
b) Purchased, downloaded: in addition to having the right to download an item an infinite amount of times onto an infinite amount of devices, there is storage occupied, and you are anonymously tallied on the number of downloads sent over to Apple (and the labels affiliated).
So I'm not sure what of this constitutes spamming a user's account:
1) The right to download an item an infinite amount of times, onto an infinite amount of devices, as you please. 2) The fact that your right to do so is presented on a list.
For me, if they had actually placed the files on my iTunes-enabled devices - that would be grounds for unacceptable business practice. This to me feels harmless and absolutely not unethical.

But they DID place files on itunes enable devices, so I'm thinking you aren't clear on what actually happened. Millions of people actually had the album on their iphones (those with particular settings) and were actually unable to get it off of their device, which is why Apple had to quickly come up with an app that enabled them to do so. You happened to have your shit set up in a way so that it didn't happen to you.

PJ_Soul - I stand 100% corrected! I didn't know there was an automatic downloads option for purchased music. This being the case, I absolutely agree with you that it should not have been allowed.

The album is so-so. Too poppy. Not like old U2 rock. Only few good songs. Maybe it will grow on me... But disappointed at this time.
Yeah, I think it's pretty bad. Completely lacking in soul. But not as bad as their last album, and arguably not as bad as Pop (I wouldn't argue that, but some might)... which isn't saying much!
I love Pop. Great album but I see why people don't like it. Staring at the Sun is fantastic and the album has one of my favorite lyrics: "What you thought was freedom was just greed....".

Just as a public service announcement, it's not a good idea to have auto download set on of your devices.

Agreed. But by putting the option on their devices - it obligates Apple to not do such promotions as this one (or opting the promotion out of automatic downloads). Opting a customer into a freebie is one thing - but the key word is 'free': when it occupies storage, and when it consumes bandwidth mandatorily, it has a cost associated with it.

I've been keeping a close eye lately on my Pro-ject Debut Carbon turntable and so far, no unauthorized U2 downloads! :-D

And that was the case. When a user clicks "agree" to the use of iTunes (on their phone) they agreed to Apple placing free items in their iCloud. And the users have to explicitly set on their phone to automatically download iTunes purchases as the default is off. It's an opt-in feature, not an opt-out one. The reason why you don't hear this all over the place is because the outrage is more convenient for the media to report on. And off all the people screaming all over the place saying their rights/devices/bodies were violated while keeping their eyes closed and having their fingers in their ears, so as to not see & hear any other arguments. And subsequently they're too lazy/dumb to remove the album from their iPhone/cloud so they're demanding Apple to remove it for them. Ah well, people...
So for the majority of people having iTunes, the album only appeared in their purchased list/iCloud and they had to explicitly download the files to their computer/phone. As long as the album was only there waiting in the cloud, no user storage was taken up.

Thank you for saying this perfectly.
The absolute MAXIMUM costs to a customer who had already opted into automatic updates for music: 100MB/12,000MB (the amount of accessible storage on Apple's lowest capacity iPhone), or 0.8% of the available storage. That number is 0.17% of the total accessible storage on a 64GB, or 0.08% of the available storage of the 128GB.
If I had decided that was unacceptable, I noticed that it takes me longer to retrieve and toss the free flyers left on my front lawn than it did for me to use Apple's tool they made. Had I gone through the tedious task of deleting the tracks one by one (11 tracks * 2 seconds each = 22 seconds) it might have been even faster.
On that note, I'd like to propose we speak up against the nature of flyer distribution. They're free advertisements, thrust upon our private property without our opting in, ruin the aesthetic of our lives, and they take upwards of 30 seconds to dispose of. It's a complete outrage.
PS I'm not entirely nuts - this is more a joke than anything - though I agree with the quoted post.

Ha! Yep! Had a young lady start to slip a flyer under my windshield wiper once and I said, "No no no!" and she did it any way and I grabbed it and ran after her and said, "I don't want this" but she wouldn't take it back. I think she thought I was some crazed dude. Later I felt badly for her because I remembered being 19 yr's old and having to get up at 5 AM to walk the streets delivering freebee papers to make a few bucks. Awful kind of work! Especially when we could create better jobs than that.

What if it was a flyer with a download code for the U2 album? )
I'm glad Bono apologized, and you get the feeling that Apple/U2 may have thought they were doing a generous thing, but I still think it could have been handled differently (as people have already mentioned, put it on iTunes/U2's website for free download etc).
It's not a case of complaining about free music, it's about not being given a choice in the matter. What if it had been One Direction or whoever the latest 'Idol' winner is? I can't stand U2 and it did briefly piss me off that I had one of their albums on my iTunes. I deleted that shit as soon as I could.
