Eddie's voice

Putting myself out here for the usual abuse , with some making a radicle comment!!!

But here we go I have been listening to some of the recordings of the recent euro shows and some of the footage for Mid West tour ( all be it on you tube ) I was in Leeds and Milan personally and thought that the shows once again amazing and amazing set lists , but I just felt Eds was struggling with a lot more of the songs compared to last tour etc , I thought all those yesterday's sounded awful to be honest from Cincinnati , but of course my opinion only , and I know you don't always get the best sound direct from video camera's but they are better now than say 2 yrs ago

Just wondered what anyone else though about this ??

It's hard to tell on youtube vids. The official boots are the best way to judge. He's pushing fifty and some nights just not as strong as others. I think you can even hear the difference from early in a 3 hour marathon and the end of the show. There are still some nights when he is really on and blows me away. Father time is a bastard.
  • I would say that Ed sounded really strong in Tulsa from start to finish. The slow starts and first encore really seem to give him a break. Some nights he struggles a bit more but I think it's astonishing how his voice has held up over the years. Compare him to others from the early 90's era, specifically Cornell, and I think Ed blows them away.
And he who forgets...will be destined to remember...

Considering all the screaming he did in his youth, we should be grateful he is still rocking!

One effect of the busted knee that I noticed in Lincoln -- he didn't perform his usual hyper-aerobic workout during the show, so he had more control over his breath. It had a positive difference on his tone.

We don't want his leg to stay messed up, and we love it when he's a maniac on stage, but I do think his physicality gets in the way of his singing at times. But, whatever. That's Eddie, right? Nothing can keep that man down.

Thought the same thing as soon as I heard this years boots. They've been touring almost every year, think maybe it's time for a break.

The heat and humidity clearly took their toll in Austin. Plus, Ed was swallowing bugs every other song (seriously). I think it's just hard for a 50-year-old man to do the screaming thing consistently anymore.

Listen to him on the slower, mid-tempo stuff and he's as ridiculous as always. I know it's been a couple years now, but those solo tours were the best I've ever heard him, mostly because he didn't have to play "Blood" and what not.

Listen to him on the slower

Read this as "Listen to him in the shower". Ha! Everyone sounds better in the shower...
    ...time for glasses, maybe....

Agreed! His voice is jarring all by itself. The solo tours are another level.

Good point. I also think that rage isn't there like it was. It is more cerebral now. That is why he can still sing the shit out of the cleaner songs. Years of smoking doesn't help and he actually is running around more now than he has in a awhile.

he sounded very rough in Amsterdam.. sounded downright fantastic in Vienna..!
I'll put the Vienna performance up against any in the past 5-6 years..!

this is in an ongoing topic since this board went live. Can't believe he is still killing it after all these years.

I think maybe it would help if they didn't speed up the songs so much when they do them live as well. Agree he sounded awesome during his solo shows, just think all these shows are taking their toll on his voice and he could use a break/rest.
