Thoughts on Pink Floyd's "Endless River" UPDATED: LISTENED TO WHOLE THING NOW

Obviously it's not out yet, and we only have the three audio snippets to go on along with the info that it's mostly instrumental and it's essentially a double album. While I miss Roger Waters, I think that the musical core is mostly intact here and I'm excited to hear what they made. Lack of lyrics is probably a good thing, considering it's post-Waters. I pre-ordered it on vinyl and am quite excited.

    New song out:

    http://consequenceofsound.net/2014/10/pink-floyd-premiere-new-song-louder-than-words-listen/

In my opinion, this song starts cheesy and then unfolds into a very classic-sounding Pink Floyd tune, complete with soaring solo and my favorite touch- the tinging sound from "Echoes", my all-time favorite!

This song already carries an incredible memory for me. It was playing while I put a loved one in touch with someone incredibly important. Some of the lyrics seem very right for this moment- here are my favorite lines from the song:

    With world-weary grace
    We've taken our places
We could curse it or nurse it and give it a name

    It's louder than words
    The sum of our parts
    The beat of our hearts
    Is louder than words
    Louder than words

    Let's go with the flow
    Wherever it goes
    We're more than alive

After listening to the three snippets (the Louder than Words vid won't even load for me), I think this album is likely going to be a steaming pile of crap. Way worse than Division Bell even. I am very strongly reminded of the mood music that was always playing during the more dramatic parts on the original 90210. [-X

Of course, that's just from three 30 second samplers... but if those are the samplers they chose to release, that's a bad sign.

I think it's going to have a lot of fairly harmless ambient stuff that it's hard to get too attached to, but that there will be enough moments of the Floydian sound to make people happy. I don't like a lot of The Division Bell, but there are also a number of moments I love.

If the vid won't work, try any of the first three options at this link:

  • Maybe its just me.... But I really like Division Bell.... High Hopes and WDYWFM are standouts for me.... Again, really looking forward for this.

I don't mind Division Bell - my first concert ever was Pink Floyd during that tour, so it's got sentimental value; I listened to that cassette tape a LOT, lol.... but compared to everything that came before it? Even if i like it, i still have to admit it's basically garbage by comparison.

I feel like Waters held the rebellious soul of the band, rooted in the pain from the story of his father, and when he left, they lost that instant credibility factor, where it feels so real because it's coming from that place. Now, it's just "that band" playing songs. The thing is, they can still evoke incredibly emotional musical passages, and I feel like this song is evidence of this, particularly in its 2nd half.

  • You saw then live? Wow! I had an intereztibg processs with PF. I started listening to records backwards: I listened to DB and AMLOR before listening to early stuff, like Meddle or Atom Heart Mother.... In general, PF rules, but I understand if some emphasize some stuff...

RVMer, I saw them live too on the DB tour at the Oakland Coliseum. It was incredible. I wish I could have seen them with Roger, but definitely didn't ruin it for me.

I bet it was! I could only imagine Gilmour guitar sound reverberating in the air! Amazing! And yes, live with Waters would have being incredible. ... Did you see the recent The Wall tour?

I did not. No regrets though. The show I saw was enough. I've listened to my share of Roger Waters, and while I used to connect with the angst, it's all just too pain-centric for me. I'd much rather see Gilmour and co. do it than Roger and his band of musical mercenaries.

Have you heard the new song that I link to yet? I'm curious if you like it. Like "Sirens", this one didn't capture me at first, and then grew on me big-time over the next few listens.

I saw the DB tour too but was left a little cold. Pink Floyd was the band I listened to in high school late at night alone and in college with friends doing (ahem, or using) what most everyone who listens to Pink Floyd in college dorms do. Anyway - there was just something off about hearing those amazing songs about isolation with 50,000 of your not so closest friends. (Wish You Were Here is not a campfire sing-a-long!) Regardless, I am glad I had a chance to go and the lights and videos were pretty cool. Would have loved to have seen them in the 70s but especially in the 60s.

Also - at the time, it was the most I ever paid for a concert ticket -- $45.00

I like it!!!! It was great to hear that guitar tone, Rick's keyboards and Nick's drums.... By the way, "Sirens" got me from the first listening. ... I usually like a song when I first listen to it....

    Rick is deeply missed!

It WAS incredible! I remember that concert like it was yesterday. Fucking spectacular! For sure the biggest production show I've ever seen (and I mean that in a good way... candy for the ears and the eyes). And most of what they played was classic PF. I LOVED that show..... of course, I was on acid, lol. So I don't REALLY know what the show was like in reality. I know it was a a fucking trip and a half. :))

Was lucky enough to see them twice during the Division Bell tour, Yankee Stadium from the last row behind home plate and Giants Stadium from the 50 yard line a few months later. Two totally different perspectives and two of the best concert moments I've ever had.

pink floyd is my favorite band. i started getting into them the year before division bell came out, and like someone else above the division bell show was my first concert ever. it is incredibly exciting to me that we get to experience the excitement of a "new" pink floyd record release.

Omg. Finally listened to Louder Than Words. X_X I am glad for those who like it. I would certainly rather like it than feel like I do right now after listening, which is actually somewhat disturbed, lol..... For me it is absolutely cringe-worthy. Atrocious. One of the worst songs i have heard in a long time. And it's not even unique. A totally rehashed sound and rhythm and melody from older PF, but far, far, far, far worse and completely emotionally barren..... but that's just me. ;;) :))

It's funny. I can enjoy the song and still empathize with what you hate about it, PJ_Soul. There are lots of "rehash" moments in that song, and frankly, they are generally my favorite aspects. The new sounds and themes that are brought in are the parts that I enjoy least, whether it's the "Babies Go Pink Floyd" nature of some of Rick's melodies in the first half of the song, or the totally lazy way that a lyric like "We bitch and we fight/diss each other on sight" comes across. Still, Pink Floyd is in my DNA, and there is enough Pink Floyd in this song for me to feel it.

I was listening to the strange Greatest Hits collection "Echoes" on Spotify this morning. Strange because it's really hard to figure out what drove the song selections, aside from having at least a tune or two from each album. The newer tunes sound great interspersed with the classics, but there is a clear difference. They sound more like contemporary rock songs than the timeless musical language that comprised older Floyd. I think this is why people sometimes consider AMLOR and everything after as David Gilmour solo stuff. I don't mind calling it Pink Floyd. They can still speak that language we love, but now haltingly- they are no longer fluent.

  • Well... as far as I know AMLOR was supossed to be a Gilmour solo record, at least at the beginning. And I really like it. The Division Bell gave me High Hopes, one of my fav songs ever.... Records like Meddle o WYWH are incredible, with their own space in history....
  • I don't feel bad posting this because I shelled out the big bucks on a vinyl pre-order:

piratebay has a leaked copy of the full album. It's definitely real. Look for the one that was uploaded by mR12 and is approx. 150 MB.

I'm listening to it right now and I love it. It certainly has "THE SOUND". It is pretty much exactly what you would expect from a Pink Floyd album of ambient music, which for me is a great thing. I hope you check it out!

I'm going in for my first listen today.I saw them on MLOR tour in late 80s and they filled up/Sold outJoe Robbie stadium in Miami in a matter hours. It was epic.Ive also seen Roger Waters solo I think on Pros and Cons of Hitchhicking tour, but I may be wrong. It was "The Wall" heavy and that was awesome as well.A reunion some day would be just right I think.
