GA line etiquette

This is the first time I will be able to wait in line the day of the show and am a little curious about what to expect.
I was able to get the day off work, but my wife wasn't, so I will be waiting in line alone for the majority of the day. Is this going to be an issue when she shows up with a little over an hour before the doors open?
Waiting alone is going to cause other issues when the merch truck opens, 10C ticket window opens, bathroom breaks etc. Are people mostly understanding of having to leave the line for short periods of time, or do I need to find a second person to wait with me to hold the spot in line for the entire day?

You should be able to go get your tickets, go to the bathroom and even get food as long as you don't abuse your time you let a few people on line know you are going and what you are doing, try to be nice ask if anyone wants anything etc. And you shouldn't have issues we are all supposed to be there for one another and make sure we all have a good experience
I am quite curious because I am in the exact same boat. I understand getting in and out of line as a necessity, but what about the person showing up after not waiting? What has occurred at recent past shows?

Maybe save a spot for one person, but I can see how the whole "saving spots" thing can be a gateway... what if one person wants to hold a spot for 20? Saving spots will probably continue to be a rare thing. I'm sure most people will line up.
I do agree that saving a spot for one person should be fine...not everyone will do it, but if you're 15 in line, all of a sudden, you *could* be 30.
The problem with 10C and number systems is that people would get a number at 8 or 11 PM the night before the show, return to their hotel rooms and then "check-in" every few hours. About 90 minutes before doors, they'd return to the venues and then push back people who were there non-stop from 10AM on the day of the show.
That's fine that they were there at 8 PM the day before the show, but they should have stayed there if they wanted that spot on the rail.
