  • Amongst The Waves is my favourite song by the band since In Hiding. I got goosebumps listening to it in the record store (pre order hadn't come yet) and spun it over and over again. The last few notes in Mike's solo are just perfection, and when Ed screams "Laaaayyyaaaateeeee"...holy shit that's a Vs scream. Amazing.

Top six PJ album for me

-love The Fixer.  A good PJ song is a good PJ song. Nothing wrong with being catchy.  Amazing defiant chorus.

There’s only 2 songs i dont care for. Thats pretty good.   I have it above all of their 2000s albums.
  • One album has to be the worst.  This one is it for me.

Funny that my (now 19) daughter still calls that her favorite PJ album.

I distinctly remember my daughter and her teen friends seeing The Fixer on vh1 a bunch and telling me how badass Pearl Jam was.  That was really fun.
  • I love this album!  The Fixer is a good song, too! Piss on the haters!

I listened to side one today.  amongst the waves is PF good.
The 1st time I heard Unthought Known it seemed like music from the future.
Johnny Guitar and Supersonic deserve more love.  That fuzzy guitar in the fixer?  Hell yeah.
The End is borderline melodramatic but it occupies a place on the hard to ignore completely parallel "PJ-Jay" timeline.

  • Always happy to profess my love for this record.  Right time in my life.

Got Some won me over live. I enjoy Just Breathe and Amongst The Waves. The End is an interesting final track. That's really it and so this one always ranks at the bottom for me.

I remember listening to Got Some (the first leaked song of BS) and thinking: What a groovy song? That scratchy voice in combination with the grunt after "What's wrong?" made me eager to hear the rest of the album. It was well worth the wait.

not my fave, but I do enjoy it time to time. people saying it's their worst, you do know about LB right?
Yes, but Backspacer is just so boring and uninspired. At 36 minutes or something a real halfassed effort imo.  At least LB takes some chances stylistically and has some diversity. BS songs are all among their worst and Unthought Known is easily the most overrated, plodding song with the cringiest lyrics in their catalog.

Underrated by who? They were pretty well reviewed and Backspacer is probably the most appreciated album by non fans. Every time someone mentions the genius of Unthought Known, the album gets more overrated.

I never saw the problem with a PJ album where they tried for anthems/ballads/poppy tunes.  I don't want ten albums that all sound similar.

The “Fight to get it back again” line defines Pearl Jam to me.

It might be the album I listen to the least but it’s got very good songs. Interestingly I prefer the ones that seem to get bashed the most around here... Just breathe, unthought known (Gems and rhinestones being my favorite part). Also like force of Nature and The End.
I can’t get into The Fixer. I‘ve really tried but I honestly don’t like it

Agreed, but I would say the same for LB as well.

I’d say fans familiar with their capabilities would be the most accurate gauge of quality one could hope for and if anything are more prone to overrating than the opposite.
