Counting Crows

In the past two years I've been pulled in by this band. Their musicianship, Adam's lyrics, the longevity. I feel they're very kin to PJ. In terms of what the stand for and how they present their music. Would love to see these two play together.

I remember early on they were fans of PJ. I think Ed snuck into their dressing room once and left some anti-corporate stuff there that pissed off Adam. Love the first two albums. The rest are kind of bad

Anti-corporate? Haha, well I guess Adam being pissed means that Adam will never got over it.
They've actually been pretty solid in terms of sticking to their guns with albums. According to Rolling Stone they just read tread the same theme and ground (but they don't seem to have a problem when half the bands in that mag do the same thing) They've been consistent and unapologetic about what do. And like any good band should, they've progressed. (It's evolution baby)
  • Some of us were discussing their live shows in another thread a few weeks back.

Saw these guys play at the wellmont in New Jersey few years ago. They had just remodeled the place and the crows played like 5 nights opening the place up. The place is sick, any good show playing there worth going to. The night we went, they were playing more of the new album which I knew shit about. Well, ah, ya, not really a great show but cool to have seen them once. We stood in the front of the stage, no one was fighting for rail that night, and there wasn't one to fight for :D

I like the first 4 albums. after "hard candy" I just lost interest. Not sure why. Only saw them once on the recovering the satellites tour, and it was a great show.

August And Everything After is a top 5, desert island album for me.

I've seen them live three times and unfortunately have been pretty disappointed each time. Adam just doesn't have it live. Great studio band but the roadshow isn't what you would hope it to be.

I love Counting Crows, they make some really meaningful music and I think they're quite underrated. I do hear they're hit or miss live, but when I saw them in 2008, it was a fantastic show.

Long December always makes me cry....

I started to learn how to play that on piano, and then stopped because it's too depressing to listen to so many times repeatedly trying to learn it :)) :(

Seeing them next week in Detroit, which should be really awesome.

CC was my first 'real' concert, in 2008. Since then I've seen almost 150 shows. Gonna be a trip seeing them again! I hear they are very hit or miss. The '08 show was fantastic, hoping they bring it again! Regardless, I love their music and have for a while, so should be a great experience.

Another fantastic show by Counting Crows! It was a great time all around. First, the opening band Twin Forks killed it, I was really impressed and they definitely won the crowd over. It's the folky-Americana effort from Chris Carraba, formerly of Dashboard Confessional...didn't know how that'd pan out, but I enjoyed it a lot. They even did covers of Blister in the Sun and also The General Specific by Band of Horses! Their studio album is a bit underwhelming, but their live performance was quite the opposite, full of energy and just sounded better.

But the Crows...we were pretty close to the front, and the Fillmore Detroit is one hell of a gorgeous venue. Fun setlist with a lot of new songs included. Haven't listened to their latest yet, but I enjoyed the songs I didn't know. Of course, a smattering of the more well-known songs, which was a treat. So happy they played Hard Candy, that song brings me back to some of the best times of my life. The first time I saw CC in 2008 was at Jones Beach, and at that show before playing Hard Candy, Adam told us he wrote the song at Jones Beach. Plus, that song was frequently played on a weekend getaway me and some of my closest friends took senior year of high school. So lots of attachment to that one. Their Friend of the Devil cover was gorgeous, A Long December, Colorblind and Perfect Blue Buildings were particularly beautiful, Omaha and Rain King were a blast too (love how they do the beginning of the chorus on Rain King live). Only criticism is when Adam sings toooo much off-melody. Some different phrasing here and there-fine...but I feel sometimes he can over do it, such as in Round Here. Didn't 'ruin the song' for me, but I think it took away from its beauty. That's one of my favorite songs, ever period, so was a bit disappointing. Also Adam was rocking some cool tshirts, including a Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix one and a Dead Boys 'Sonic Reducer' one :) It was a great night, and I look forward to the next time I see them!

That's my main complaint with seeing CC live. He constantly changes up the melody of the songs and it really takes away from the songs IMO. I've seen them twice and really don't have the urge to see them live again. Glad you had a good time.

I have a download code available for the new album if anyone wants it. I got an autorip from amazon so don't need it. Apparently it'll only work in North America. First come first served. Shoot me a pm if you're interested.

Saw them when the wellmont was remodeled and they played like 5 nights supporting their new album at the time. Was an ok show, got a lot of the new album so didn't know much. Funny side story, fast forward some months and I'm in LA for the tom morello show at the El And who's standing in front of me? The guitarist of the crows. I took out my phone and said,"hey man, u guys play this place before?" and show him his pic at the wellmont, and he laughs and says,"you made it to one of the shows?" Pretty cool guy. Not a fan of the crows but the dude wasn't a dueshe.

Great band followed them from the start, this desert life still there best in IMO . Hard candy still too polished for me, but there latest somewhere under wonderland a return to form for me. Saw them in Wolverhampton civic hall, UK in 2000 and still ranks as one of my best gigs. Be great to see them open for pearl jam, but would they prefer to co headline! Can't see it happening though, one of the few bands never to split up from the 90's, mean a lot to a lot of people...,,,..

Very similar experience to me. I first saw them at the Civic in Wolverhampton in 1994 and have seen every tour since. Totally agree that TDL is their best and Somewhere Under Wonderland is a return to form. Saw them recently in Manchester and they're still a great live band. I guess you either enjoy Adam's melodic fluctuations or you don't, i usually don't mind them but he can go too far.

This is one of those bands that has about 20 songs that I love and about 100 that I find forgettable. Only saw them once (twice) at the 2003 Bridge w/ PJ.

If any of you haven't heard THE SONG August & Everything After, it's probably my favorite song of theirs and you should track it down. Amazing.
