Has nothing to do with government run. Private hospitals fuck up all the time. It's a tough business.

  • It's a damn shame that VA hospitals are run so poorly they are for the Vets that serve this nation they should be at the top of excellent care ....

ok, so the instruments went into the "cleaning machines" (autoclaves I'm sure) so I dont know what effect IF ANY washing BEFORE the hit the "cleaning machines" would have?

Instruments are typically hit with a protein degrading spray as they are sent out of the procedure room, then machine washed, then autoclaved. Dental instruments are often very delicate and wear out quickly with the impact of the machine washing. I know that some dental surgeons have some instruments (indeed, the more delicate ones) that they handle the sterilization on their own but I don't know the procedure they use, or who oversees. The risk to these Veterans is probably very low as most hospital protocols are designed with redundancy, overkill if you will. If they did thorough hand washing all will probably be OK, but they have protocols for a reason and this is a major mistake.
Also the perception that all VA hospitals suck isn't accurate, my wife did a residency at an amazing one in Arizona. Not that you guys think that, just I know some do.

We hear a lot about how hospitals screw up but I wonder what accurate statistics would tell us? Are we better off not going to hospitals? What percentage of people who go to hospitals end up worse off rather than better? I'm not defending hospitals necessarily- what do I know about hospitals- just trying to instigate a little critical thinking.

  • brianlux i can attest that if i didn't get to the hospital on the day of my heart attack i'd be dead that's as plain as i can put it ....

The title of this thread is somewhat ridiculous.
