Did this really happen in '03

In this article it says that...
"Several fans with really low Tenclub numbers (allowing them to end up with the best seats) attending multiple shows on the tour would turn their backs to the band anytime a song was played they didn’t like or deemed old hat."

If it is true, then I am finally sold on the lottery approach. I was on the fence previously.

never saw it. All I ever saw was the low number crew rocking hard. Occasionally standing relatively still, but enjoying the show. Personally who gives a shit how others enjoy a show? The back turning I find real hard to believe. If they did, who gives a shit, their loss.

I find it hard to believe that this actually happened. Those people would have been ripped to shreds during that show and in places like this ever since..

If it did happen, that's why they're now complaining about newer people with an equal shot of ending up front...but they dug their own grave in that regard. The new fans will rock hard to songs like Even Flow and Once, just the way those low-number fans once rocked hard to those radio hits.

But yeah, not every show can be a "lost dogs and b-sides and songs we've only played four times in the past five years" show. They're practically obligated to play the big songs...because not everyone has a low number.

I originally heard this was why they went to the seat lotto system (where seats in rows 1, 2, 9 and 10 were given to random fans.) I'm fine with that...it keeps things fresh up front so the band doesn't get the same 500 people for 6/8 shows in a row.

If it is on the internet it must be true.

I've read about it in varying places... I believe it. I think those listers are definitely big enough fuckers to pull that.

The back turning is 100 percent true. Big deal.

It's also NOT the reason why the band went to the lottery system, but it's nice that people think that.

I love how in the old days the people standing still were always 10C members with low numbers. As a long time member, I sat very near quite a few contest winners who really had no interest in the show. Not sure why it's always fan club members

    Seriously shitty thing to do.
Didn't see it happen at the shows I was at, but then I'm not usually looking at the crowd all that closely.

There was some reports of back turning and booing when they played Busleauger that year and possibly some parts where Ed addressed the crowd in a political way. I don't recall anyone turning their backs over songs they didn't like, but yeah it was a bit of a douchey time in America.

I have to ask, how do you know this so matter of fact?

I know people that did it, and the songs they did it to. The only direct response the band made was to start playing Last Kiss to the fans in the back, because that became the most common song to turn your back on.

I've never been one to be up in arms about it - people paid whatever they paid for their ticket, and there's no contract that says they need to enjoy the show or even respect the band. To each their own.

The other side of that coin is the band doesn't have to play whatever a few douchey "fans" want...

Yeah, i never believed that was why they went to lottery. Not sure I realized that was a theory actually. I just figure they went for lottery because they decided to reintroduce GA in North America, and that was a part of their solution for accommodating that. Plus the cluster fuck that I've heard about from PJ20??

Wouldnt be surprised. Honestly I love greatest hits style PJ shows. Those people turning their backs arent fans. They have some kind of mental health issue where they think they own the band or that they *know* the band. The entitlement is creepy.

I have a hard time believing Eddie wouldn't have gone off on a justified rant if entitled douche bags were turning their backs on the band during shows. Especially if it was happening with any regularity.
