Henley, Redford, The Eagles and Walden Woods

Great event for a great cause. Bought my tickets this morning via the presale. I have been visiting Walden all my life and hope to be able to for the rest of my days. I attended Don Henley's first benefit concert for Walden in Foxboro back in 1993. The lineup that day featured Henley, Aerosmith, Jimmy Buffet, Sting, Melissa Etheridge, and Elton John. I've often wished I could go back in time and relive that show because I would appreciate it so much more at 38 than I did at 17.

This show is much different, in a much more intimate venue (Eddie played here solo in 2011) but it will benefit the same great cause. And, my man Robert Redford will be in the house!

Walden Woods Project – Eagles in Concert
9/16/2014 at 8 pm

Club presale will run from Friday, August 1st - Sunday, August 3rd at 10PM

Robert Redford is the recipient of the Walden Woods Project’s 2014 Global Environmental Leadership Award in recognition of his enduring commitment to a range of environmental initiatives. WWP founder Don Henley will present the award during a fundraising event on Tuesday, September 16 at the Citi Performing Arts Center Wang Theatre, featuring an intimate concert by the Eagles. Doors open at 7:30 p.m.; Program begins at 8 p.m.; Eagles concert at 9 p.m.

Proceeds from the event will support the mission of the Walden Woods Project, the Massachusetts-based charity founded in 1990. The organization protects Thoreau’s Walden Woods and applies Thoreau’s philosophy through educational programs that address the global environmental challenges of the 21st century.

Don Henley praised Redford’s environmental leadership saying, “Bob Redford was an environmentalist long before the well-being of our natural resources became an international concern. Throughout his extraordinary career as an acclaimed actor, director and producer, he has devoted himself to myriad environmental initiatives too lengthy to enumerate. Redford has stated, "I think the environment should be put in the category of our national security. Defense of our resources is just as important as defense abroad. Otherwise what is there to defend?” I can’t agree more. Whether he is defending the integrity of the public lands we leave as our legacy to future generations; whether he is lobbying Congress for the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, fighting for the protection of the dwindling herds of America’s iconic wild mustangs or advocating for measures to curb climate change, he puts the full measure of his time and talent, and the force of his convictions, behind all the compelling environmental causes he supports. The Walden Woods Project is honored to present its 2014 Global Environmental Leadership Award to Robert Redford.”

The Global Environmental Leadership Award is given to the individual or organization that represents vision, creativity, dedication and sacrifice in addressing global environmental challenges. The award seeks to recognize significant achievement in the areas of climate stability, biodiversity, natural resource stewardship, human understanding, and global environmental policy. It draws its inspiration from the foundational thinking of Henry David Thoreau and builds upon his ageless principles of environmental stewardship, global interconnectedness and personal responsibility. The first Global Environmental Leadership Award was presented in 2012 to President Bill Clinton for his landmark efforts to address climate change via the Clinton Climate Initiative/Clinton Foundation. The 2014 award will be presented to the dedicated political and environmental activist, Robert Redford, in recognition of his life-long passion for nature and issues of social justice. The Global Environmental Leadership Award is presented every two years.

For nearly 25 years, the Walden Woods Project has preserved the land, literature and legacy of Henry David Thoreau. The historic Walden Woods is known as “the cradle of the Environmental movement”. Large tracts of Thoreau’s woods have been saved by the Walden Woods Project and are protected in perpetuity. Further sites are in urgent need of preservation. Complementing the organization’s conservation work are a series of local, national and global education programs based on Thoreau’s philosophy and designed to engage students, teachers and the general public in the themes of natural resources preservation and stewardship. The Walden Woods Project also manages the finest Thoreau research library in the world just a short walk from Walden Pond. Go to walden.org for further information on the Walden Woods Project.

A younger, scruffier, hairier version of myself at Walden, circa 1995 or 1996. Truly one of the most beautiful places I know, particularly in the fall.
