Johnny Winter - RIP

Heaven done called
Another blues-stringer back home.

Sad to see another of the great ones go. Just 70 years old and in the middle of a European Tour.

Only saw him once in a small club up in CT and what a show it was. He was incredible.

The one funny story I have about him was in 5th grade (or maybe it was 4th), I was doing a Kidsday (for those of you not from Long Island, that's a 2 page insert into the local paper Newsday that's "written by" and geared to kids) poll on favorite music group with bands like The Who, Eric Clapton, Led Zeppelin (and, no I'm not quite THAT old - I had older brothers who started me out right). Well, anyway, I included Johnny Winter on the survey. So, I'm going around to other classrooms to poll other kids in my class and the class clown (a girl, but can't remember her name) and her friend vote for Johnny Winter. Well, the teacher looks at them and goes - you don't even know who he is, you can't vote for him. They say sure they do (I know they don't either, but what the heck - this is a very scientific Kidsday poll. If they say they like Johnny Winter than that's ok by me). The teacher then proceeds to ask them - well, then what color is his hair (the teacher obivously didn't know or she wouldn't have asked THAT question). The class clown answers - white, of course. The teacher looks at me to see if that's right, and I say - yep. White hair. So somewhere back in a 1980 Kidsday archive there are 2 votes for Johnny Winter.

Well, here's another.
Sorry. The world doesn't work the way you tell it to.

Ooops. Sorry for the double discussion. Was typing this and submitted before I saw the other. If they can be merged, I'm fine with that.

Oh man... I knew Johnny was in rough shape and it was just a matter of time but still, just not a day you want to see. R.I.P. Johnny Winter- one of the great blues players.
“The fear of death follows from the fear of life. A man [or woman] who lives fully is prepared to die at any time.”
Variously credited to Mark Twain or Edward Abbey.
