From Congressman Justin Amash:
I voted yes on the Lee of CA Amendment 34 to #HR4870, which prohibits funding in the bill from being used pursuant to the Afghanistan Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF) after December 31, 2014.
AUMFs and declarations of war should be narrowly targeted. Unfortunately, the executive branch has interpreted the Afghanistan AUMF very broadly, to expand the war far beyond its original parameters.
The Afghanistan war is the longest ground war in U.S. history. As the ground war concludes, the Afghanistan AUMF should be repealed to prevent the president from improperly citing the AUMF to justify the use of military force in other countries without specific authorization from Congress.
Ending the Afghanistan AUMF also would end the unconstitutional "legal authority" for the indefinite detention of Americans on U.S. soil without charge or trial. The 2012 National Defense Authorization Act purports to derive its indefinite detention authority from the AUMF.
If the president believes additional military force in Afghanistan is justified and necessary, he should seek and obtain Congress's approval for a separate, more narrowly targeted AUMF. Under our Constitution, only Congress may declare war or authorize the use of military force. The president's unilateral authority is limited to repelling sudden attacks on the United States.
The amendment was not agreed to 157-260.
Please tell me how the GOP is the roadblock again??? There's only two parties and they are not Republican or Democrat, they are Authoritarian and Libertarian. Which side are you on?
