Drive by Truckers help

Last Friday, I saw Drive by Truckers for the first time. I literally knew nothing about them or their music. My friend suggested checking them out and they were incredible. I couldn't believe I hadn't been introduced to them sooner. Can anyone suggest what album(s) or songs I NEED to get or listen to? I literally own nothing by them, where should I start? Thanks

If you want to go by album, I'd say start with Decoration Day, then The Dirty South. I think those are their two best records with their quintessential lineup. Southern Rock Opera is the next go to album. People may say start with that too. Brighter Than Creations Dark is probably their last really essential album. All their albums are good to great, but those 4 are their best IMO.

they do have a best of album, and while its a fine album to get introduced to the band with, there are so many great tracks that that album really doesn't encapsulate the band. I say start with those 4 albums, and then check out the rest.

Thanks for the list - I enjoy them as well - I have a few of their albums but would like to expand it . Its a shame about band members leaving.

I'd rank A blessing a bit higher because it has 2 great Isbell songs on it, but the album is a thrown together mess, lots of great songs, but to cohesion. The band was at the lowest at that point. It should be ranked higher because of the classic lineup though. So you can check it out before Pizza or English (their current album).

I always give people a rip of the live at the 40 watt dvd. There are a lot of free shows on archive.org. I think they were the best band around from 05-07 when Jason was starting to hit is prime. Any of those shows are great to listen to.

as far as studio goes i would also start with decoration day, southern rock opera and dirty south.
This show, another show, a show here and a show there.

space city might be my favorite dbt tune.

Congrats on discovering DBT, they are fantastic. Mike Cooley can write a tune like no other.

Dirty South, Decoration Day, Southern Rock Opera are the albums to get started with. The Fine Print has some real gems on it as well. I 'm really liking the new album too.

I also recommend checking out Blitzen Trapper as well. Solid band out of the Pac Northwest.
  • Cool. Thanks. Anyone else feel free to continue to make suggestions

tim simmons' suggestions were pretty spot on. you're gonna need jason isbell's southeastern, too. best record of 2013. jason's sirens of the ditch is also great. as is patterson hood's murdering oscar. you'll be tempted to buy cooley's fool on every corner. don't. worst sounding record i own. you'll get the same sound quality from most their shows on archive.org for free. alabama ass whuppin is really the only dbt album to avoid.

disagree on Jasons new album, not a fan. I would get the self titled Isbell and the 400 Unit

    +1 here for southeastern

Yeah, I think Southeastern is one of his best. Elephant is certainly his best song since DBT.

I'd probably rank his solo stuff

    s/t 400 Unit album
    Southestern

    Sirens

Southeastern is fantastic. Beautiful, haunting, honest and everything in between. Also go see him live. Great show, nothing fancy just all about the music.

Glad you enjoyed the show! Here are my recommendations for albums to start out with.

    Southern Rock Opera
    Decoration Day
    The Dirty South
    English Oceans

They just announced new shows for this fall. Unfortunately I will miss the Northeastern shows because I will be out of town for some PJ shows.

Here is a board where DBT fans hang out and talk about the band.

I disagree that Alabama Ass Whuppin' should be skipped btw. I think it's a good live album from an earlier lineup. It was reissued not too long ago and is easy to find.

My cousin was telling me earlier today that this venue is a converted old fire station. Pretty cool.
