Generic/Store Brand Stuff

I sometimes find generic or store brand to be of a better quality than the more expensive name-brand for different items.

For example, Great Value raisins are moister, plumper, and tastier than the Sun Maid brand, you know...the lady with the bonnet holding a tray o' grapes
.....image.

who would think it, but it's true.

Anyone have any other examples?

The Sun-Maid lady always makes me think of my childhood - my mom would include it in my lunchbox every day.

I definitely go the generic route with aspirin (Tylenol or Advil substitute) and bottled water (depending on the store). I wouldn't say they're better, but certainly equal and less expensive.

(Note - I tried generic toilet paper once. Never again!)

I couldn't really think of any food items though, so looking forward to hearing from others.

We buy a lot of generic/store brand cereal, and I find it's almost always better than the original...with rare exceptions like lucky charms....lol That one you can't replace....the marshmallows are always chalky....

The last couple times I bought raisins I got those exact ones, the lunch box packs - and there were ants or whatever bugs in them. This over like 10+ years. Fucking trauma. Now I can't eat them like that. I live in fear.

It never even occurred to me to buy a different brand.

Oddly, around me the supermarkets don't sell name brand Apple jelly. But the big supermarkets have their own brand of it. I like the stop and shop one best.

Kirkland Signature/Costco brand has the best stuff...except for their shampoo/conditoner-that stuff smells icky-poo, works fine just can't stand the smell.

We just switched to Costco brand toilet paper. I think it's just fine but my husband's not a fan. I told him to suck it up since we have about 30 more rolls to use.

    To your first part...heretic!

To your second one, nothing like Peanut Butter Cap'n. A few months ago though, what we bought had a plastic-y taste. Scared us off and haven't eaten it since.

    Dammit.

Safeway Select brand is usually good, and President's Choice is also often better than name brands.

aren't there only like 10 huge grocery producers that sell to all the smaller companies, who just end up slapping their own label on the product? i heard that the 365 brand organic milk at whole foods is bought from the same place meijer gets theirs.

Most of the time the store brands are just fine. The only time I remember a problem was when I bought a can of Kroger cranberry sauce. I make a cranberry coffee cake that my prince is very partial to. I once bought the house brand because it was on sale. When I baked my cake the flavor wasn't very good. It was back to Ocean Spray after that.

Generic pepcid works... aluminum foil? Not so much. I agree with Chadwick on the croutons..Hard to mess up baked old bread.

Edit to add..a lot of products are made by the same manufactures and they just change the labels. Hellmans mayonnaise is an example..they sell the exact same thing at aldi.

I have been informed that neither the store brand version of Ritz crackers or Tostitos are welcome in our household.

However - according to my oldest son, Dr. Bob is a suitable replacement for Dr. Pepper
  • We live in Texas and HEB has their own brand of quite a few things - all of which are very good. There are a few things that can not be substituted...Tide, Snuggle, A1 Sauce and Blue Bell Ice cream.

Love Costco toilet paper except it's too damn fat to fit in my toilet paper holder. It gets stuck and won't turn >:P it ends up sitting on the floor or on the back of the toilet until it's small enough to fit. The other day it fell in the toilet and somehow my 6 year old didn't notice until after he had taken aim and started peeing. He started screaming and freaking out in the bathroom and I came running only to find an entire roll of Costco jumbo toilet paper now in need of being fished out of his pee. Oh joy.

Allergy pills and razors. I'd be broke if I bought the name brand stuff and the generics work just as well. I can't even tell the difference.

Ditto. Half the price and exactly the same thing, literally. I don't understand why anyone would buy name brand anything from the pharmacy section. That counts for stuff like vitamin pills too.
