We did the Boy Scout salute. Girls Scouts do the same salute. Equal opportunity indoctrination, LOL.

(Hey, don't get mad- I loved being a Boy Scout. I learned a lot in Scouts including outdoor skills, first aid, cooking, tying knots, Morse code and how to smoke cigarettes by cupping the smoke in the hand and exhaling into a smokey fire.)
“The fear of death follows from the fear of life. A man [or woman] who lives fully is prepared to die at any time.”
Variously credited to Mark Twain or Edward Abbey.

Here's the Anti-Defamation League's hasbara spin on the salute:

Social Media Campaigns Glorify Kidnapping of the Three Israeli Teens
Alongside the outpouring of concern on social media for the safe return of the three Israeli teens kidnapped last Thursday, including a twitter campaign with the slogan #bringbackourboys, exists a cynical, hateful and dangerous campaign praising the kidnapping.

The pro-kidnapping messages, being promoted by some Palestinians and others across the Arab and Muslim world, are conveyed through pictures, cartoons, blog posts, memes and even songs.

The most prominent is the “Three Fingers” campaign, representing the three kidnapped youths. This is a variation on the four-finger salute adopted by the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood in their fight against current President and former general Abdul Fatah Al-Sisi, and in support of ousted president Muhammad Morsi. Social media images depict adults and children performing a three-finger salute in solidarity with the kidnappers. In some photos, objects, such as three bananas, are used as props to recreate the salute, and similar themes have also appeared in cartoons in Arabic-language newspapers.

    Here's the truth:

Media postings twist 3-fingered sign of support for Mohammed Assaf into celebration of teen kidnapping
    http://mondoweiss.net/2014/06/fingered-celebration-kidnaping.html
A viral campaign to slander Palestinians seems to be gaining traction. Just yesterday Sheera Frenkel of Buzzfeed lectured Palestinians for allegedly forcing their children to celebrate the kidnaping of three Israeli teens:

Palestinians shouldn’t be posing kids like this.

What pose is that? Frenkel linked to a site showing photos of Palestinian children holding up three fingers, allegedly to denote the three teens. Max Fisher of Vox promptly retweeted her tweet.
Well today Palestinian mountain climber Mohammed AlQadi woke up to find he was featured in media reports as part of a Palestinian campaign to “perpetuate their joy” over the kidnapping of 3 Jewish teens in the West Bank. The Israeli website Walla News echoed the claim:

Just one problem with that. There are scores of photos of people making this three-fingered sign because it was the way folks supported singer Mohammed Assaf’s bid to become Arab Idol last year. Mohammed AlQadi put up three fingers for Assaf.

A lie will go round the world sooner than the truth can tie its shoes:
[O]n Thursday night last, began to emerge around the PA new phenomenon: three fingers raised, indicating a kind of “victory sign” the residence of the three hostages. The phenomenon has spread to social networks and the West Bank put photos documenting the lifting fingers defiant.

More distortion: “The campaign is a celebration of the kidnapping by Hamas, who are being blamed for their disappearance,” states another site, “Vocativ” (which claims to use “intelligent technology, smart journalists and the wisdom of the crowd to find story leads and angles no other news organization can”). Its report in War of Words Over Kidnapped Teens fingered AlQadi:

The first campaign, which began to gain traction in the past 24 hours, is a celebration of the kidnapping by Hamas, who are being blamed for their disappearance.
….“Three [kidnapped] to set our prisoners free. Our love for Hebron,” wrote Mohammad AlQadi from France, holding three fingers and smiling to the camera.

What a smear. There may be Palestinian sympathy for the teen abduction, but you’ve got to come up with better proof than that. And they picked the wrong guy.

Climber Mohammed AlQadi is a celebrated Palestinian peace activist. He’s got 120,000 followers on Twitter and is currently living in France and training to climb to the top of Mt.Everest to spread awareness of refugees.

AlQadi says he never wrote or posted any support for the abductions. He was supporting Assaf:

I spoke with AlQadi by Skype today and he told me.

“I’m trying to help my country now so we share awareness about of Palestine by sharing real people speaking from Palestine. I’m using attention from my climbs to bring attention, working on these activities. I don’t want war or violence but justice for my people

“Assaf made me famous, he shared a photo of me and thanked me and said he was proud of me. My dream is to climb Everest and share a message, to bring the plight of refugees all around the world

“I don’t believe in violence because violence bring more violence, I’m trying to show the truth and I’m upset for how they use my photo.”

The athlete is justifiably upset. Writing here and here:

Im so mad coz an Israeli website take my photo that was taken 1 year ago to support Mohammad ASSAF ARAB IDOL And the 3 sign was mean vote for him on his number 3 .http://news.walla.co.il/?w=//2756150 Today allot of friends send me link in Hebrew for a website showing that im with kidnapping people What I say im against kidnapping 5000 Palestinians I’m with justice And for the website who share my photo without asking I thinks thats fucking disgusting and disrespecting others Any way its time to end occupation And its time to stop the game made by Nataniaho to just destroy Palestinians more and more and till now no body say that I’m responsible of arresting 3 israelis so in my opinion its a film from shabak and the IDF to just destroy and destroy what they can and then they say we search about 3 israelis Realy WTF In this photo Arab idol Mohammad Assaf And Adventure Mohammad ALQADI Contacting Ynet, they removed his photo from group of photos they’ve published.

    What a fucking joke.

These kidnappings have been used to close down checkpoints for days, and now they're enforcing curfews throughout the west bank....the IDF raided 8 cities last night in one of the biggest mobilizations since the second intifada.
Collective punishment is considered a war crime under international law....but we all know that Israel thinks they're above international law, esp this one, as the occupation itself is in breach of the same conventions.
Israel is blaming Hamas for the kidnappings without proof (Hamas denies responsibility), and pressuring the PA to reconsider the newly unified government.
Its obvious these kidnappings are being exploited for political reasons - to undermine public opinion of the unity government, and further vilify the Palestinians. The three finger salute BS is another example of why we shouldn't trust at face anything we hear from Israel's hasbara machine.

    Thanks for those posts, Drowned.

And Jason, thanks once again for the laugh. Gotta sort of nudge your ring finger a bit behind your middle one.

(Yes, I spent time trying this. Also cannot do the Vulcan Salute despite repeated efforts.)

Granted I don't know much about Star Trek, but found this link interesting and somewhat related.

*edit - would help if I posted the link.
