Favorite mike mccready tone era?

IMO mikes tone shines best in his earliest days. Think ten- no code. For whatever reason I noticed on a lot of bootlegs he tended to switch from distortion to that weird drippy watery rotovibe tone (I think that's what it is). For example, yellow ledbetter at Madison square '03 during the solo instead of that amazing gritty strat distortion he goes with the drippy rotovibe. I think he just got bored with his sound but IMO I'll take his old tone/ setup with the marshall and fender over his custom amps. So what do y'all thinks your favorite Cready tone? Any songs in particular you like or dislike it?

I LOVE his 2003 and 2000 sounds. Live versions of Ledbetter and Nothing As It Seems (with the roto, wah, distortion, and delay) made me fall in love with those pedals.

mccready's marshall tone was his best, imo. boutique amps of his sound too thin to me.

My friend told me that after 2003 tour, he switched to all digital pedal board. Can anyone confirm or deny it? That probably has a lot to do with the different tone if so.

I agree I love his marshall the best, and xtremehardy while I respect your opinion I'd have to say that while I do love that rotovibe sound with the distortion and wah it's the watery drippy sound of his I don't like. But that's what's great about amp settings is there is a sound for everyone

One particular example is ledbetter live in MSG 2003 ... I think the sound is the rotovibe on full throttle mixed with maybe delay but very little distortion from what I can hear to give it that watery sound ... Maybe a chorus pedal thrown in? Idk I'm not to sure

  • At first I didn't like how a lot of the PJ staples were given weird effects during the 2000 tour but listening to those songs/shows now, the sound he has on those boots a unparalleled. Just great.

I LOVE that tone! The 2006 "cleaner" tone for Ledbetter is one I'm not a big fan of.
