Help regarding upcoming free (limited) release of Pixar software Renderman to the public

Hey everyone.
So, my friend who is a great artist found out that the software Renderman, which is used to make Pixar films, will be released to the public for free (with limited actions, but can still do some great stuff).
He wants to know if there are any tips to learning it on his own, or if anyone can recommend any books to read. Also, what brand of computer does he need? Is there any other software he should learn?
He really wants to make Pixar-like movies.
