I wish this band released music and toured with the same vigor and frequency that they released merch.

They just released an album and toured for a whole year.
1 album since 2009 and an absurd amount of tshirts and merch in between. I remember Binaural-era there were like, five different tshirts for sale on the website. I guess it just cheapens what Pearl Jam is to me when it seems they're so interested in the merchandising side of things. Oh well, I'll continue to vote with my wallet and not buy this stuff. Just my opinion.
When they release an album people clamour for more merch, and when they release more merch, people clamour for more music. They really can't win. People always want what they can't have.

I think they should do away with the newsletter every month. It's basically just an excuse to release a load of good or bad merch every month now. To me it seems they are releasing some merch just for the sake of it and some people here just buy the merch for the sake of buying it. Crazy.

Wow. I really hope that when they decided to spring those shows on us, the last thing on their minds was selling more merch.

There was a while that the boards were asking for more merch. Or a better selection. And for a long time PJ did not have nearly as much stuff for sale as most big bands. And they still have less than a lot out there, DMB, Phish, even Springsteen to name a few.

Quite the assumption. People profess their love for this band in many ways...

Really whats on their mind when they put out an album and then allign a tour behind it?

PJ does many things with a purpose and wink and nod sometimes. Its not about purchasing merch but celebrating those albums. Really so why didn't they do vitalogy or riot act then? There was a purpose.

Well no, not really. They toured for a few months last year and a few months this year. When you compare that to other bands, it's actually pretty light on the touring. i'm not complaining (well maybe a little :)) but I felt the need to defend that posters argument). In comparison to many other bands, PJ has a very light touring schedule (hence the crazy demand for tickets).

edit: I added up the shows from last year and this. Two years of touring had 62 shows. That's pretty small when you consider tours like 2000 (or 98, 03, 06) would have 72+ in a tour that took place in a single year. PJ hasn't been a band that tours very heavy in the first place, but it's getting very light these days.
It's more like 62 shows in 12 1/2 months rather than 2 years. 10/11/13 to 10/26/14. And factor in that they went from the eastern US > western US > Australia > Europe > midwest US with a few Eddie solos thrown in between... I'd say that's pretty hefty.

A lot of people obviously buy the merch, since they keep making more and more of it, so that tells the whole story no matter who you know "in real life."

You're right, people keep buying the merch which is exactly what I can't figure out. Granted, the past 12 months were filled with shows, but in prior years Pearl Jam was more of a tshirt or clothing company than a full time band.
I guess I just liked it better when there were down-years like 1997, 1999, 2001/2002 and the band was working on new music rather than the 10c machine pumping out tshirts. I'm just finding it a bit too much like KISS with new merch every month during the "offseason" from touring or a new record.

I almost never buy merch besides vinyl, so I'm not sure I quite get it either (especially the really random crap, like Falla Sheep), but KISS has one thing going for them that Pearl Jam doesn't: lunch boxes. :P

I'd rather buy a pearl jam t-shirt than an old navy one almost every day
