How was David Cross in Portland?

He is one of my favorite comedians, and was wondering how his preset stand-up in Portland went over. Anyone?
Oh, if I knew where it was I would take you there...

I like cross too, but his set was pretty uneven. He went on a lot about Las Vegas, some of which was very funny, some ho-hum. Did a piece about circumcision which fell pretty flat and was funniest covering Toby Kieth's "I Love this Bar...and Grill". He also came out between the 1st and 2nd encore and was quite funny.

Bottom line.. I think he did the gig to hang out with his friends and although the set was pretty scattered, it did have some nice moments.

I had honestly never heard of the guy before these tix... my girl and I did not find him to be that funny... even after our pre-game drinks. The circumcision thing was kind of weird, what with the sucking of baby penis noises and all... I'm serious for those who weren't there... he went on for like a whole minute mocking jewish circumcision procedures... yowch.

The best David Cross moment was during RITFW when he was leaning back to back with Mike and rocking the tamborine (and not talking ;) )... that jam just was killer.

What a priviledge... David Cross and Pearl Jam on the same night. I've loved Cross' comedy since "Mr. Show" on HBO. I'm sure the people who didn't like him are HUGE Dane Cook fans.

At times, Cross was almost ready to bring the crowd to their feet with laughter. At other times, I would not have been surprised if a rotten tomatoe was thrown at him.

As I like David Cross, this is a metaphor for his performance. If he were a baseball player, his stats for last night’s performance are as follows:

    1 for 4, Double, Walk, 2 K’s
Thrown out trying to steal 2nd base
    1 Error

agreed, and being raised Jewish, the circumcision bit was funny, albiet too long. I liked the way Ed gave him props bringing up the circumcision later in the evening saying something like - Maybe all my problems stem back to when I was 8 days old.
A mind full of questions, and a teacher in my soul
    And so it goes...
  • LOL I laughed when Ed said that. David Cross was pretty good, but if u go back and read the Portland thread or whatever thread it was where people were posting jokes he has told in the past, you will find that most of those jokes were said last night at the Snitzer (sp) gig. Mikey and Ed seemed to be enjoying him at sidestage.
Personally...I laughed at a few things, but I've seen better comics...I've also seen worse.

i wasn't there, but it sounds like the typical david cross set. a couple long stories that never pan out, and a few bits that are absolutely hilarious. actually, mr. show was kind of the same way - some of the sketches just didn't work for me - but i still consider that show genius because there were so many laugh-until-it-hurts moments.

i feel like i missed the boat on the dane cook craze. i'm sure if i was 15 years old instead of 23 i'd think he was hilarious.
*Does not include encore of Garden and Leash.

Yeah I agree with what you are saying. Mr. Show had some dumb sketches but I think he worked with John Ennis, Bob Odenkirk, Jay Johnston, and other writers on it and they'd choose together what sketch to go with.

I'm 23 as well and think I'd laugh more at Cook if I were 13. I don't get the hype. I thought the "itchy asshole" routine was great until I heard he ripped it off.

count me in aswell.. although i think david cross is in a whole other league.. Dane Cook can work a crowd well.. he just doesn't have a whole lot to say like say a Bill Hicks (my personal hero) or even David Cross would..

But I think for a mass audience much of whom is there to see Pearl Jam and probably don't know the comic.. Dane Cook would have worked better.
